Slams vs Your own Goals

I am getting to the point where I'm even agnostic to the species. I just want to go on cool hunts.

While the Grand Slam and Super Slam are out of reach for may of us, the “Super 10” seems more approachable for the working man.

One of each of the two categories of North American Game species. The single sheep would be the hardest bit.

I don’t have an issue with slams from the standpoint of they bring awareness to various species that may not get enough attention and, thus, conservation dollars. On the flip side of the coin, that same demand for a finite resource can drive demand and cost way up. Markhor are a good example of this. Average Joe has probably never seen or heard of one, a semi-adventurous hunter has probably heard of them but can’t afford one. The guys that are hunting them are all chasing the weatherby award and need to check a box/complete a slam.

The silliest part of the “slams” to me are all the people that pay money to groups to have them recorded so they can show off their slam number and accomplishments to others

Im in the camp of using it to expand horizons and try new things. I like having the motivation to explore. I dont have the money or time or desire for a super slam but think the super 10 is pretty neat. The stories people whove drawn the tags and have all the big game animals in Colorado, Wyoming, etc are pretty cool. I know people who try quail and grouse slams and that seems cool and not expensive. To each their own.

I'm generally not a slam guy, but I would love to have an NA squirrel slam. I'm sitting at Fox, Red, and Yellow Bellied Marmot. Still need a gray and a black color phase gray, and woodchuck for sure. Not sure what all other species you would need. Two crown jewels would be the Delmarva Fox squirrel and Malabar Giant Squirrel (not NA, but an insane purple and gold squirrel from India). Neither of those two are legally huntable as far as I can tell.

That sounds fun, id love to do it with a .36 cal black powder “squirrel” rifle I have.

Living in Colorado we have quite a few species. My lifetime goal was to kill all of them with a bow. I killed the 9 big game species. Kind of a small “slam” of my own. I couldn’t have done it financially if it didn’t happen all in my home
State. That was my lifetime goal.
