Skunk in a dog proof trap

So, I guess this is a bit of a strange thing? I've never caught a skunk in a dog proof trap..wife calls me just as I get to work this morning that she smells a skunk in the house! Ky daughter confirmed that, yep a skunk is in one of the traps by the chicken coop. Great, now its going to be a bit before I get home from work so I am hoping he's cooled off a little. How do I deal with this stank a** thing? I've read a couple different things...lung shots, then they dont spray a majority of the time. Head shots, they spray everytime. Needle filled with acetone on a extending pole. Not sure how that will work?? What do you fellas with experience say?

Needle is the way to go if you plan on trapping for awhile, and got the set of stones to pull it off. Highly effective.

Get a painters extend pole with the screw on end. Get a syringe that the plunger fits in the end cap. Most tractor supply or vet shops have them. Get stout needles. Fill syringe, with recommended cc, insert the plunger in end cap so it supports the entire thing. Walk slowly up to the skunk, head on so he knows your coming, and just stand there for a couple min. When he relaxes. Slowly insert the needle into chest cavity and gently push. Dead skunk.

I just need to do it this afternoon...cause he's in the trap now! Not sure I have the needle or acetone. I'll probably just sneek a CB cap into his lungs and hope for the best.

I have caught ~5 skunks in DPs the last few years. Despite what the internet says, I have head shot them every time. 2 sprayed, 3 did not. I always left them in the trap until it was sub 0, and then removed them. I trap for the sake of turkeys, not the fur.

Probably don't listen to me.

The syringe on a stick is normally used on animals in a box trap, where they cannot raise the tail to spray. I personally would NOT try to inject a skunk in a DP or foothold.

Like Dirtbag, I've had pretty good success with heart/lung shots. Get it broadside and slip it the crease.

The skunk is in a "Dog Proof", a specially designed foothold trap intended for 'coons. He's going to have to manhandle the skunk to remove it from the trap. Best done post mortem.

Gotcha. Thought by dog proof it was a live trap meant not to harm dogs inadvertently.

I trap armadillos in live traps and turn them loose on my developers land who is a wanker.
