Skip the base layer for late season hunts?

One of the joys of cold weather for me is being able to wear military weight poly pro long Johns. That soft inner feels soft on the skin and fleece slides right over that smooth outer surface. Out in the coldest weather in high winds I have that as my first two layers, then one layer of fleece down low and two layers of fleece up top, insulated bibs and insulated parka. With less extreme weather less fleece is a lot less bulky - not everyone uses puffys. I love wearing insulated bibs and often put them on long before a parka. The bad thing about layering is a considerable amount of time is spent adding or taking off layers. It’s the last thing someone wants to do when excited about getting over to the next stopping spot. Keeping yourself slightly cool is old mountaineer advice to keep sweating to a minimum.

“Modern” fit is often way too tight. It’s ok if the next size up makes a dude’s butt look fat. Working and hunting clothes for the last 200 years have been on the loose side for a reason.
