First post on this forum. Appreciate any advice.
Living in Bozeman, been out for wolves a bunch in region 3 and WMU 316.
Been on some tracks but haven’t heard anything yet.
Looking to take a few weekend trips up to northwest MT where the wolves seem to be the most populated. I ski into the zones most of the time; with little expectation of finding wolves, I figure I can get a good ski out of every outing.
I’m looking for recommendations for good snow pack and wolf pack combination areas in region 1. Thanks.

There are wolf tracks everywhere up here, but seeing live animals is very difficult. The brush is thick and the mountains are steep. I have yet to see one and guys I talk to that have lived here for decades have mostly seen none or one in the NW.

There's some areas I think you'd be more likely to get a wolf than others, but idk. I'm not huge into giving info to FNG's that first thing violate the second etiquette guideline of the site.

I’d keep looking in the area you are seeing tracks. Wolves have been in yellowstone for decades, you will run into them eventually. You can always ask some of the pro wolf groups around Bozeman where you could ski to see them. Who knows, maybe you get some spots out of it.

I would remove the region and WMU numbers from your post. Then read the forum rules.

Welcome to RokSlide.

Does posting about units apply to wolves? There is a thread on Idaho bears with unit info all over it. I don’t think anyone is very secretive about their wolf honeyholes.

Snowpack is not great this year, especially down low, so in some areas you are gonna have to drive up to get decent snow to ski. Sking really limits you unless you just get lucky and they happen to be in the area you are in. Typically, I put a lot of miles on a snowmobile or ATV to cut fresh sign before the hunt begins. DM me, and I can share some areas to look at.

Going to go back this weekend as others have said the snow pack up north is low and we have been having some weather down here.
I have been asking pro wolf groups. Some of them have an impressive grasp on the patterns of the packs. Also biologists are happy to help.

Go up Thompson Pass, the Bull River or the Vermillion River. The are many packs running the Montana/Idaho line outside trout creek and Thompson Falls. This year you can get around ok without a snow machine, but they just received a good dump. I’ve seen and run into them several times on the border and every drainage will have them. I ran into several wolf sets up the bull river area.

Have heard this from multiple sources. Thank you

The lack of snow I imagine makes it harder since the wolves food source is spread out. I talked to a buddy about using skis for hunting a few years ago but we never got around to it. Are you using a standard AT set up or the specialized skis that work with pack boots?
