How would the Sitka mountain jacket hold up for September rain in the high country? Trying to find best/cheapest packable rain jacket.

Its not a rain jacket, so if you plan on being in rain, I would definately look at other options. Cheap Frog Toggs is light and packable for surprise storms.

Marmot Precip is a good option if you can find used in good condition. They seem too me to run a bit tight.

Definitely wouldn't run the mountain jacket as a rain jacket. Would wet out in a few minutes. The flash pullover would be a good light weight bet for september thunder storms

This is wrong. Those jackets are the same material, both with welded seams. They would do the same job, the mountain jacket just doesn't have a hood.

Not to derail the thread but why is the mountain jacket more expensive than the flash?

BTW - OP, the mountain jacket will shed some rain but the no hood thing is a deal breaker. If I was looking for something packable, the cloudburst can be had pretty cheap right now.

Both are just Windstopper though. Flash just doesn't have a lining of any sort. You could get a much cheaper wind shell that would do the same thing.
