So I went on my first elk hunt this last year and only had a few pieces of nice clothing and I actually really preferred them and thought the stretch and fit really made it easier than the cheap stuff I had that wasn’t really made for it. I would like to start accumulating pieces but can only afford the basics for now. I have a pair of timberline pants, traverse cold weather hoody(which I am not sure if this is a good piece or not, seems bulky), good base layer, lighter puffy, and ok rain gear. I am fairly active when I hunt with glassing in the am and pm. (also hunt white tails stationary in what is sometimes extreme cold temps, but not my primary goal for this). Anything that can be used for that would be a plus. The weather I hunt in is usually cold and windy but would like to be comfortable from 0-60. I am thinking about picking up a jetstream jacket but am not sure. Also I am 6’3 180lbs. I really like to get things in tall which is a pain because there isn’t that much available. What are the staples to build off of for these conditions?

Jetstream would be a good addition! The traverse is a great piece but not for active hiking, I use mine under my jetstream for longer sits or getting to my hunting area on my UTV. I would think a puffy would suit you better than the traverse for stuffing into a pack.

Jetstream is an excellent jacket choice. Love the pit zips, pocket layout, hood, Gore wind block, it's still quiet and does a decent job resisting rain.

Thank you. That’s kind of what I thought but it seems a lot of people are not using a soft shell. But it also sounds like it is mainly ultra light guys. I won’t be doing more than a night or two anywhere in the near future. How about pants, I think the timberlines are pretty solid but would it be worth getting an accent or mountain or just another timberline? Also any recommendations for mid layer?

Also, those who have experience with the jetstream and traverse cold weather hoody, is the jetstream as warm ? I know it’s not really a comparison in much, just wondering about warmth.

I have the ascent pants and really like them for early season hunts. I’m also gearing up on a budget, so the way I look at it is why have 2 of the same pants? Might as well try a different lighter pair, they still work well into cooler weather if you are layering

I’m Just gearing up for my first elk hunt though so I don’t know a whole lot about western hunting just thought I’d throw in my perspective.

Own them all. The grinders are my favorite of the bunch. They are comparable to the mounatin pants.
Mid layer I like core heavyweight or apex

I should say that I do have a few pairs of Eddie Bauer guide pro pants and I think this somewhat for the bill for warmer weather. I used them out west for two days in 35* weather and they did good while active. The only thing is they are not quite as stretchy but not bad either. Just alittle easier to move in the timberline. But 1/4 the price

What is the difference with the grinders? They don’t really classify them in the mountain category. Do they not breathe as well? Different fit?

Wore my Jetstream jacket and Timberline pants yesterday again on a midwest spot and stalk. Was reminded how perfect a combination they are.

Temps around freezing, windy and wet ground and I was cozy as a kitten. With proper layering this combo is good for a lot of scenarios.

Jetstream and timberline pants get the most use of my Sitka gear. Timberlines are some serious pants. A lot of protection but they are heavy. I wear lighter pants earlier in the year like the FL corrugates or kuiu attacks and even lighter in the summer where I go with even lighter pants like a tiburon.

If you had to pick between a heavyweight or apex for September-October elk in CO what would it be? I'm stuck between a core heavyweight or the apex. I just wore the heavyweight over a core lightweight this year when it got chilly.

If it was just Sept then the apex, but into October the heavyweight for sure.
I like the apex fit and feel a bit better but the heavy weight is definitely warmer and will take you deeper into the season way later..

Is the core heavyweight suppose to fit snug? Cabela’s only had a medium to try on and it was tight and a little short.

I really dont know, but yes it's a little snug, sized like their base layers. Mine isnt short however I am not overly tall at 5 10.

You need to size up to a large. My sitka core heavyweight has an athletic fit, but a longer tail.

Can anyone tell me how the core series fit? I see they don’t make any in talls, but are the sleeves and body on the longer side or are they standard-short?

It's funny how a lot of guys overlook a vest that can be worn as an outer during early season hunts and an inner layer during late season hunts. I don't leave home without a vest year-round! I just picked up a Fanatic vest that is made of quiet cloth (micro-fleece). It has a nice hand warmer pouch plus a pocket in front that is great for small items (rangefinder, calls, etc).

A shirt that I've used and abused for many years is Cabelas microtex. They make it in thin and thicker material. I really like the thicker material shirts. They are relatively inexpensive, wear like iron, dry super fast, and are super quiet in brush.
