Simple Ethics Question - Shooting During Archery Season

Oh man, it would blow your mind out here. We have paid public ranges, and private club ranges, like most places. Plus a few official unofficial public ranges with no fees, range officer, facilities, or improvements. They're mostly old quarry pits, a couple are somewhat more split up into lanes. None like what you're picturing. And they're all kind of a s**tshow. One is currently closed because, allegedly, some dude shot dragon's breath in the middle of fire season and caught the woods on fire.

Our state forest and most federal lands are mostly open to target shooting, with very few exceptions. With all the logging roads we've got in Oregon, you end up with a lot of spur roads and cut banks covered in trash targets and casings.

I enjoy the privilege of being able to shoot 400+ yards almost anytime, less than an hour away, for only the cost of gas. The downside is too many people that don't understand safety or how to clean up after themselves. Or just don't care.
Excellent summary!!

Do y’all not have dedicated public rifle ranges? Ileaugal on the national forest and public lands in the Midwest and east coast.

Not one piece of federal ground can you shoot for practice unless it’s a dedicated shooting range.

Yes and while I love my local range I avoid it like the plague Sept-Oct. the average gun owner/hunter coming out of the house to sight in their rifles before hunting season scare the living shit out of me. I prefer finding a quiet piece of public land so long as the fire Hazzard isn’t too bad.

I avoid shooting on public land if at all possible just because a lot of the people who do it are careless slobs and I don't want to be associated. But I'm lucky to have a great range 30 minutes from my house. Costs me $50 a year, well worth it. Interestingly the range is located in country that gets hunted pretty hard by some guys, so I guess all that shooting doesn't bother the elk much.

The fact that you're even asking about it means to me that you are a considerate and ethical person. We need more of that these days IMO.

We have a range on one of the best farms we hunt on, i wouldnt think twice of hunting right after shoot steel there all day. It’s normal to the deer here

I think its essential to practice right up until rifle season starts, so that means shooting during archery season. I try to shoot in open areas that are 100 yds or less from the road. Any archer that is expecting peace and quiet in these places is unreasonable. I do think its best to avoid going deep into elk country to fire off rifle rounds all day, but public land in close proximity to roads is totally fair game in my opinion.

Not in the west (Colorado). There are some high traffic areas where it’s illegal. However, unless it’s posted illegal, it’s all fair game.
