Sig 8K Cold Weather

Just finished doing the same test with my trusty but outdated 15 year old Leica Rangemaster 900 just to see.

Display was bright the whole time and I got a few ranges out to 100yds before it stopped giving me anything. I wiped the frost off the lens that had just built up and it was able to get some ranges out to 800. Best I can do with it on a good day is 999yds anyways.

Oh ya, and I can’t remember the last time I changed the battery on it but it’s been atleast 3 years or more.

I’m definetly in the same boat as Kyle about my Sig RF. It works exactly how I was expecting to but I have huge doubts it’ll work in the environment and at the time I need it to.

Anyone in need of a new Sig Kilo3k? Probably be fine if you live in AZ

Just put my boys Leupold Rex-1400i TBR/W and my Sig Kilo 2200BDX in the freezer at -2 degrees F for one hour and then I put a new, warm battery in each so here are the results:

- Neither rangefinder could pull an accurate range and were very slow. The Leupold display was bright while the Sig display was barely visible, even in the darkness outside. I put each rangefinder side by side on the counter in a 70 F degree room and let them gradually warm up.

- 30 minutes later I tried each again and here are the results: Sig display was brighter and I could range up to 700 yards. The Leupold display was still nice and bright while its ranging capacity was pretty much back to normal.

- 1 hour later results:

Both rangefinders working normal.

Results: looks like both rangefinders functionally performed similar to each other for the “freezer test” with accurate ranging returning 30 minutes after removing from the freezer for each but the sig display was slightly dimmer than normal and didn’t return to normal brightness until the one hour mark. Perhaps this test is not a good benchmark for function and performance. Anyone else want to try this test with other brands and see how they fare?

Maybe this could be the drop test equivalent for rangefinders

Dang! That’s pretty good on the Leica! So far that’s the winner! How was the display on it? Anyone else have another rangefinder to test? Sorry Kyle for the thread hijack Maybe we should make a separate freezer test thread for rangefinders

I agree, this deserves its own thread. It’s valuable information to a rangefinder buyer, but it’s a rarely thought of when buying one.

Haha all good!! I do think battery has a lot to do with it and it’s hard to know for sure. I think some rangefinders need more battery than others to work normal too in the cold.
