Sierra Heavy TMK 6MM Testing

That's not your hunting rifle, and you know it. HAHA

I'm not saying people can't shoot 1.5" ten-shot groups. What I am saying is that if you shoot enough around other people, you start to see treads, and the tiniest amount of pressure makes people do funny things.

I am allergic to callifaonia so I can't meet you there.
Hahaha I hunt with all my guns!

If I could have sold my 7mm I would just have the .22, 6 & 6.5. But I couldn’t sell it, so I rebarreled it. Still unsure if I’ll even hunt with it though.

And yes 10 shots under 1.5” with an audience, or money on the line, is no easy task.

3 shooters, 1.5 MOA
6 shooters, 1.51-2 MOA
3 shooters: fliers and excuses

Someone is optimistic.

Now I feel pressured to make sure there is at least 1🤣 Guess I’m breaking out the good gun and some cinder blocks.

Yes.

For reference out of 150+/- shooters at shoot2hunt classes, only 5-6 have hit the 10 untimed shots inside the 2 MOA circle when they showed up. No, these are not brand new shooters or inexperienced either. People remember what they did one time, or a few times on their home range from a bench, or a perfect bipod position- as to what they will do all the time.
So then I should feel good about ending a training day last weekend with a build and break for 15 shots into a 1.5” dot with a 9lb 308? It was off a pack.

Maybe my perception is skewed because I don’t shoot with a ton of different people. Just a really dedicated core group. That is the real reason I asked, I was surprised and realized that I don’t have a wide range of experience with the general shooting population.

That is pretty solid. If you can do that consistently (say 90% of days, and the other 10% is sub 2 MOA) with a sub 10lb rifle- that is really good field shooting.

Yeah man, when people argue this point with me, I always ask them: “show me the outside test that shows that hunters/shooters are skilled in anyway?” From the Riflekraft targets and sniper hide thing, to the Colorado cow elk hunt with a shooting test on 14” target at 200 and 300yards, to the Backfire milk jug videos, to the PA certified hunter test on a 6 or 8” target from a bench at 100 yards, to the Shoot2hunt classes…. Not one single piece of evidence you can find shows shooters and hunters being 2 MOA thing hitters when tested- not one.

I really need to go to these classes sometime and show that I’m all talk, no skill… 😂

Maybe it’s been posted a bunch in here but does anyone know the OAL of a 6UM with 116 TMK’s and how far from the lands that is with a UM reamer? Ryan is the expert but he’s a busy guy and I know a few of you prob know this.

I gave UM a go and it didn't work out for me. They make a lot of really awesome stuff but the ammo was too hot for me. Probably just my Tikka has a carbon ring. I'm sure it's great for lots of people! Don't want to add to the "wastebasket of complaints" that is rokslide just want to see about getting TMK performance in my small bore.

Reading about copper Creek also mixed reviews seems like? Anyone try choice ammunition?

I wonder if Sierra will ever do a factory load

Seems like UM is/was loading 243 with heavies in particular to retard hot levels, not just in your gun. I'd bet if you could get them to load it around 40.5 grains H4350 it would be a good place to source from still.

Sierra has sold good factory 6 creed ammo with 107 SMKs, kind of doubt they'll do 107 TMKs in a 243.

One of my buddies gave me a couple boxes of Copper Creek 300 WM ammo after he sold a rifle and it was the hottest 300 WM ammo I have ever shot. I would not be confident it will offer an improvement over UM from an over-pressure standpoint.

Have UM load up 10 pcs of different charges that are below the load that’s too “hot” in your rifle and see what it likes. I bet one will shoot well enough and be the desired bullet. Then have them load 100 of these and you’ll be set.

I have all prospective hunting buddies that self reportedly say "I shoot 1 MOA" use the Shoot2Hunt targets.
The amount of excuses when they can't put 5 rounds in the "prone" circle is crazy.

I also pack a steel target, spray paint, and t-post on all hunts.
I make my hunting partners verify all of their dope before I will pack into the mountains with them.

To sick of giving shot opportunity after shot opportunity to the new guys only to have them miss by a mile and their dope is WAY off...

I participated in this program... watched 5 out of 30 pass including myself. Eye Opening!

I'd have fun trying but I know I would join the 144+.

I’ve shot 80 or 100 rounds of their 108 eld-m and x. Prone on pack groups were 1.5-2 in. No bad batches. For comparison, I get cheap stuff for volume shooting that groups around 3 in.
Never chronographed, but 2900-2925 is about what matches trajectory. 22 inch barrel 1/8 twist tikka.
Overall, very satisfied.
