My sister recently shot a bull broadside at 150yds. It was an uphill shot that hit the femur as he passed through a shooting lane in the pines. That leg was almost completely destroyed. The shank was found against the hide on the opposite side. It’s a killing bullet for sure, but keep it in the lungs for minimal meat loss.

I shoot the 165s out of my 308 and they work very well. You are absolutely correct about the meat loss though!

Lately I've been hunting with a 7mm-08 because my wife uses the same cartridge so it's nice to just bring one type of ammo, but my favorite gun will probably always be my X-Bolt LR in 30-06. Such a classic round, almost 120 years and still a good choice for almost anything short of a safari.

It's a great choice for Safari, as well. I bet more African game has been taken with a .30-06 by Americans on Safari than any other cartridge.
