How many of you carry a sidearm when archery elk hunting in wilderness areas but not grizzly territory? And of those who do carry, have you ever actually needed it?
Always carry a 10mm or lighweight .357 while archery or muzzy hunting elk. Tons of ornery moose and sneaky mtn. cats where I hunt.

If I am not carrying a rifle during season its definitely nice to have a handgun. While deer scouting last year my dad and I bumped a black bear cub about 30 yards. Didn't see momma but as soon as I seen the cub I was concerned she would be close and glad I had a pistol for backup. We backed out and went around and avoided conflict but you never know.

I might carry a .22 for feathery 2 legged critters. Otherwise, I've never carried a sidearm while archery hunting.

10mm Glock for me. Pulled it on an unhappy moose a couple of years ago, luckily no shots were fired. Otherwise it's for the "JUST IN CASE" situations.
