Wow hopefully your luck will change. Your there so you got a chance for it to happen

Luck is actually pretty good ! I knew those tires weren't up to the job and I hadn't looked at the spare since last years trip. The fact I was able to get it inflated and back to someplace to buy the tires I should have before I left is pretty lucky. I do keep a pump , slime , and plugs in the truck so I wasn't completely unprepared.

This reminds me of the 16 year old neighborhood kid that takes his single shot 20 gauge and a slug, walks out in his jeans, Army surplus jacket and Chuck Taylors and sits by a tree for 45 minutes and ends up shooting a 150" whitetail !..lol.. being there is 3/4 of the battle, I hope it comes together for you, us big ugly green guys have to stick together !

Superkodiak38 , you're spot on. Being there is half the battle. I've yet to kill anything sitting on the couch. I do have a friend who shot a big buck while sitting on the throne though :).

They just started putting my new Walmart special Wranglers on. Should be ready to roll in an hour or so.

Always good to have new shoes :). Good luck, just remember this trip almost didn't happen, so use all your time you have to be out there, don't let that mental bug talk you into leaving early and pace yourself!

Tim , I'm good. I have no expectations at this point other than seeing new country and relaxing. If a buck or cow wants to commit suicide by hunter I'll gladly help them out. Actually it's very likely I'll kill a doe rather than a young buck. Weather is nice and once they finish growing the rubber trees to make the tires....OMG are they slow ! I'll be on my way to look around and see what I can turn up.

Haha, you might have a problem, the rubber trees are in FL and I heard the delivery guy is in MT hunting :)

What a waste of a beautiful day ! I finally got the tires mounted and haven't even eaten today. It would be dark about the time I'd get to where I plan to hunt so I'm just going to grab a room in town here and start off in the morning. I know for a fact there's no rooms available anywhere near where I plan to hunt and I want to ride around tomorrow and get the lay of the land and look at some of the places I was pointed to. Sorry guys but this hasn't been a great trip...yet.

You're going to have to tell that story when you have time :)

Friend I worked with during college graduated with a degree in statistics. He decided he hated statistics and didn't want a career in it. He has an uncle who was getting ready to retire from shoeing horses and sets him up. He graduated from Farrier school and gets a deal to live rent free on one of the plantations. All he had to do is keep watch on the back gate and keep it shut. He moves into the house and has nothing in the freezer. He gets up on I think the second day and goes to do the three S's and while sitting there a big buck walks out behind the house. He literally squeezes it off and shuffles into the next room to grab his rifle. Gets back on the throne and cracks the window and shoots it sitting on the throne. He said he finished his business and then went out and cleaned the deer before taking a shower. Good thing too. He was broke and needed the meat. I always thought it was funny.

Like mentioned above, a few easy days to let your legs heal and then come back to elk. It's a food idea to consume some recovery fuel, and the recovery rollers are amazing. They push the lactic acid out of the muscles so no soreness the next day. A short round log will do the same thing.

Because of planters heel I couldn't train as usual and would have hated to know I had to pack out meat the first or second day. By day 5 I was sort of ready. I really don't feel good until 2 days after packing out an elk. Keep after it!

I'm done ! I hunted today and saw probably 15-20 deer and could have shot at least two does but I wasn't interested in a mulie doe. The truck is having ignition issues I think. I've got a sensor problem or computer but whatever it is has killed my desire to stay. Thanksgiving with my mom sounds good and so does my best friends garage with every tool under the sun and a diagnostic computer. All free for me to use.

You should be able to use a diagnostic computer at any of the chain auto parts store. You should check it if it's a quick fix it could make a real difference on the road trip home.

Long road trip for a couple short hunts you'll regret it later if you throw in the towel now. Wish I was closer but feel free to hit up Utah on Thursday for some turkey and pie. Seriously it won't be like mom's but it's a hella lot closer. With this weather you might not make home in time anyways

Awesome thread!!! A must for any first time elk hunter. The mountains will put its food on your neck if you even if you are prepared... an unprepared flatlander doesn't stand a chance.

You don't beat the mountains in September.... you beat then in July, when it's 101 degrees with 98% humidity. Get through that and the mountains are easy.

Understand your frustration....but I agree with the others. that's a LONG way to drive to turn around now. You never know....those types of beginnings to a trip and turn around to an EPIC ending!! hang in there, take a deep breath, gather your thoughts and go from there. We are all hoping it works out for ya Shrek!

A very good thread for first timers and old dudes to read and follow. The mountains of the west don't make it easy if not prepared in many facets...good attempt Shrek at a last minute trip....Happy Thanksgiving👍

No regrets. This trip wasn't supposed to happen and It has instilled in me what not to do. Next time if in this situation either turn the tags in or keep training. I knew the tires were marginal but took a shot and they would have been fine for my first place to hunt but the stones on the roads in the Custer were asking too much. The current issue with the truck couldn't be anticipated. Got to Rapid City and I'll try to get the code read and see if I can do an easy fix on the road. If not it runs well enough now to cruise the speed limit. I just didn't want it die 15 miles from cell coverage and hours to a city with complete mechanical services.

Oh , and I could have taken a doe if I had wanted this afternoon so not cutting a tag was a choice.
