Shrek's armed camping trip 2015 ;)

Fort Riley has a herd what a great tag would be. At lest the wind noise can drown out the noises in your head now

Yes on I70. If they hadn't been on the south side of the highway I'd have stopped and glasses them for a minute but at 75+++ and the opposite side I had to let it go.

Wow ! Didn't know there were elk in the Kansas plains. Just past a herd about 5 miles east of exit 103.

Yup and some monster bulls reside here, only catch is you have to be a resident and it takes about ten years to draw a tag unless your fortunate enough to own land in the small overall area the elk live.

You're a lucky guy, as I live here, hunt all over, and have never seen them. Surprised they're up that way. Sure they weren't domestic?

Lots of elk actually. Imported a bunch 20 plus years ago in the cimmeron grasslands.

Oklahoma now has an elk season in the panhandle because of it.

Ever seen what 30 plus cows will do to a corn circle... It ain't pretty

They were in a small field of what looked like alfalfa in a low spot that probably has a good bit of moisture by what I think was a creek judging by the trees. Perfect place for any species of deer. Food , water , and cover all right there.

There was a spike shot in Lyon county last year, about 1 to 1 1/2 hours south of were you saw those along 70. About 1/2 hour west of your point there was one hit on 70 a year or 2 ago as well. 3 or 4 years ago my wife's uncle was periodically seeing a couple of cow's on some of his ranch ground in Rooks & Phillips county (NW 1/4 of the state).

A farmer I know about and 1hr west of McPherson had a bull on his property last year through the early winter. They had pictures on a trail cam. They never saw it after December.

Texans42, I've was to a couple of cattle sales in Pratt and Barber counties several years ago and was told of of elk in that country. I assume from that panhandle heard you mentioned.

Not to highjack, so back on track _ Good Luck Shrek

For anyone following my trip thread , you can't hijack my thread if it's related to the conversation. We're talking about elk in Kansas right now so pile in if you have something.

From the super quick look over my shoulder I think there were six in view. What they were bull or cow wise I couldn't tell that far and fast. It was just a recognition of "that's elk !" .

A few years ago I had about six spikes cross the highway close to Colidge, was not expecting that at 2am.

hey shrek...good luck bud. I just got back from a scout trip in NM. We fought the steady rain and found some bulls. I got to put my new Vortex spotter and phoneskope to good use. Hope you get into some good hunting yourself! Im subscribing, and will be following along. I have one month until our NM Mule deer hunt...and cant wait!!

Well good news is you kept your focus and truck between the lines. Lol. Not sure I would of faired as well. I about lost it a couple weeks ago on the way to NM. I thought it was a 17" antelope ended up being about 10" lol

Becareful that's a hell of a drive from Florida.

Thanks for the well wishes guys. I stopped in Salina last night so I could stay on a reasonable sleep schedule instead of pushing through to Denver. Today I hung out in Denver for a while so I could see it at rush hour. Not terrible really. Only the 76/25 merger was slow. I'm more sure about moving out here and working the Denver freight lanes. Met up with Colineman78 to sell him my EMR II. BS'ed for a while. Great guy. I'm killing the night in Cheyenne so I can drive across southern Wyoming in the daylight and see it. I'll be someplace in Idaho tomorrow night so I can check out some of central Idaho on my way north to hunt. That's unless I decide to hunt just deer in central Idaho. The new to me Sequoia is a road eating machine !

Dang man if you would of been a day earlier I could of bs'ed with you in Salina as I passed thru.

I'm going to run across I80 to Rock Springs and then north up 191. Plan to be in Idaho Falls tonight...or wherever I decide is good for the day. It's kind of hard to see that part of Wyoming unless you want to. Does anyone know for sure about Wyoming general elk tags ? Are they all draw or are they OTC ?

There is an office in Laramie next to the highway
Cheyenne headquarter office number is 307 777 4600. They have always been helpful with my questions
