1st deer I ever killed, intentionally. (Doe I got with my car doesn't count!! :ROFLMAO:) Got him on my grandparents farm when I was 26. 15 yard shot with 3" mag 00, went about 20 yards, did a summersault, and died. Small 7 point.

1 of my favorite hunts, on a Veteran's Day. I LOVE hunting on Veteran's Day!! It was 1 of those magical days, when the woods really came to life! He chased does around me for 1/2 an hour before I could get the shot off. 30 yards with my crossbow. 8 point.

I wanted to get a different 8 point that I killed earlier that season mounted like this, but the taxidermist said his neck wasn't big enough. Said I needed to get 1 during the rut, so I did!

Last, and least, this spike was the 1st buck I killed with a bow. I had a cousin with ideas on being a taxidermist. I was just going to cut the skull cap off, but he called me and said he'd mount it for cost. $40.

Nothing against squirrel hunting, and I have shot a few, and I'm NOT putting anyone down for posting about squirrel hunting. @DangerRanger's post just reminded me of this story.

The early '80s were a big game hunter's dream for me. I had several exceptional years. I had a couple of horses to pack my hunting camps deep in the wilderness and to pack my game animals out, and living less than 100 miles north of Yellowstone NP, I had most of Montana's big game animals less than a half days drive from my house. And I was able to buy or draw one (or more) tags for each of those animals.

So at the end of hunting season I get home from work and that months copy of Outdoor Life was in my mailbox. The cover story that month was by a guy who had "Opening Day Jitters for Squirrel Hunting."

That fall I had shot several limits of Blue Grouse, a few ducks and pheasants, a limit of Sage Grouse while my ex wife and I shot our Pronghorn antelope bucks in eastern Montana, I was on about a 10 year streak of shooting my deer and elk every year, and I had a 50" Shiras moose that year. All DIY hunts on public land.

So how am I susposed to get excited and "Opening Day Jitters" about squirrel hunting? That was the last year that I suscribed to Outdoor Life.
I read an article in F&S years ago called "Basic Training on Bushytails". Don't recall if it was on the on the cover or not. Decent article, premise mainly being that if you could sit still enough for squirrels, you could be still enough for whitetails. Don't think there was any mention of bushytail fever though. :ROFLMAO:

I’ve seen them in so many different fur colors it’s crazy! Thats the only true color phase one over ever gotten, it’s crazy how in states like Ohio it seems like all they have is fox squirrels and 90% of them are just the plain red ones. I guess the crazy colored ones are only in certain areas of the south.
Getting off topic here, but I shot these 2 about a month ago here on my land in MI. Brown/black fox squirrels, 1st I've ever seen. Shot both thru a little bit of pine needles, and actually thought I was shooting black-phase greys. I really liked the blonde fringe on the tail of the more brown one. Didn't like it enough to pay $350 for a mount, though!!

October 28, 2023. Tenpoint crossbow. 38 yards. He came in to an esterus call and stopped with barely his front half exposed. I was able to slip the bolt past two oaks. He made it barely 50 weaving yards. Just hung him up today and this is with 9 foot ceilings!

A couple of my favorites. The aoudad was taken this past November in west Texas, was shot with a 6.5prc and 156 Berger at 90 yards. Dropped where he stood. The next two whitetail, both central Texas in 2022 season, shot with my 7mm rem mag and 168 Berger’s, both 100-140 yards. Can’t remember exactly. The 8 ran about 50 yards with a blood trail Stevie Wonder could follow and the 10 just barely made it out of sight.
