I’ve got a kimber mountain ascent in 300 win mag with the barrel cut down to 22” that I’ll weigh tomorrow.

I’m waffling on the budget. Also I agree with some of the previous posts. I’d rather spend less on a rifle and more on good glass.

Ideally what I want is a minimum of 12x zoom or more, parallax labeled for yards, elevation turret, Windage done only through the retical all in a package that’s 16oz or less.

Looking forward to the weight of the 22” barrel mountain ascent.

Check out tract Scopes with the BDC reticle.
I went with the 3-15x50 and is 22 oz but I think they have some 40/42 mm lighter options. I did a lot of reading with quality and price in mind and landed on them for a few reasons.

Owning just a "few" rifles including "several" in .300 WM and "several" in .300 WSM along with the misc. .300 RUMs and having worked as an elk hunting guide along with elk hunting myself for the last 30+ years, I very strongly believe that 30 is the caliber for an elk rifle.
Now having chased the "lightest rifle" out there mentality, along with being one that isn't very recoil sensitive, my first question for your consideration is have you ever shot a light weight rifle? It isn't the same as shooting an average weight rifle. I just weighed a Kimber Montana in .300 WSM with a 3-12X50 Burris Black Diamond scope, Uncle Mike's mountain sling with 3 rounds in the magazine and it came in at 7.65 pounds. I weighed a Brown Precision Custom rifle in .300Win Mag with a Swarovski 2.2-9X40 that comes in at 7.4 pounds. (My favorite "light weight" rifle is a Kimber Montana in 7mm08 with a Swarovski that weighs in at 6.75 pounds) Now when it came time for me to pack the truck to head to Idaho for a deer and elk hunt this fall, I went to the safe and grabbed a Cooper Model 56 in .300 Win Mag with a Burris Black Diamond that weighs in at 9 pounds and my back up rifle was a Christensen Arms Custom in .300 RUM with a Swarovski that weighs in at 8 pounds.
I have a 600 yard range out my back door and I shoot a lot. While I can shoot a lightweight off the bench very well, once I hit the hills and have to be able to make that quick, "once in a lifetime" shot, with a light weight rifle the thought of MOA is gone. Therefore for me, I go to a rifle in the 8 to 9 pound range. The cow elk that I shot this fall at 440 yards from a quick off the sagebrush rest took 3, 210 grain Bergers that all fell within a 3" group. (She was dead after the first shot but didn't want to fall over!)

I'll carry a little bit more weight for shootability and the confidence that when I point my rifle and pull the trigger, something is going to tip over.

You can skip ahead to the tikka part. It’s 1000% true but some people don’t listen and like to make their own mistakes. Sounds like this is that situation. So go ahead and get one!

Elkguide - Thanks for sharing your experience in. This place. I’ve not shot an ultralight 300 WM. My current rifle is 12 or 13 lbs as I hunt with it including a bipod mounted.

My goal is 8.5lbs with scope, rings, bipod, and empty magazine.

I’ll read about some options you’ve suggested. I too feel 30 cal is where my setup should be.

With a light scope and mounts and Superlight your going to be close to a full pound lighter than your desired 8.5 lbs.

Here’s my 7 mag Superlight I just sold. The McMillan stock is actually an ounce heavier than the factory plastic. Meopta MeoPro 6.5-20x50. Talley rings. With 3 in the magazine.

I plan to run a Harris bipod between 15 and 18 ounces of weight depending on the model I pick. It will stay on my sling stud all the time.

Without the bipod yes it will be very light.

Ah okay. I can’t stand a bipod on the rifle while shouldering. I use the Spartan Javelin with the legs in my bino harness or pocket.

I also do not like a bipod for free hand shooting. The weight balance is lousy. BUT, During the last three years I learned I really value the ability to quickly sit cross legged and shoot never removing my pack and having minimal setup time between range, extend legs, sit, dial, confirm range pull trigger, rejoice while Champaign falls from the heavens!!

Alexgio518,

Have a Kimber Montana 8400 chambered in .325 WSM that meets this definition. Rifle has a Quiet Brake installed (greatly reduces recoil but not quite) weighs 6# 2 oz. in bare form. Now scope-less, it once had a 1" Kahles scope 3X9X42 that weighed approx. 12.4 OZ. in Tally mounts. Recoil was brutal before the brake. The rifle liked the .220 Grain Power Max Bonded load at 2950+ fps. Groups were tight and the trajectory was almost identical with a .270 WIn. pushing a130 gain load.! This would be good elk medicine don't you think?

Elk fitness

Is that with the full length 26” barrel or is it cut down at all?
