The unadventurous existence of a well-behaved citizen, engaged in earning a moderate living in a humble capacity, leaves completely unsatisfied all that part of his nature which, if he had lived 400,000 years ago, would have found ample scope in the search for food, in cutting off the heads of enemies, and in escaping the attentions of tigers.
- Bertrand Russell
Breaking up is like knocking over a Coke machine. You can’t do it in one push. You gotta rock it back and forth a few times and then it goes over. Jerry Seinfeld
But in all honesty, and with good fortune, it's never been told to me, and I've had the luck to warn others of it who were close to receiving it:
It's not the saying, but how it's said.
"Sit down, shut up (sometimes with the addition of ) watch and listen"
The "listen, I'm trying to tell you to shut the ffff up, you are an embarrassment right now, your are out of your league, you need to sit down and shut up, watch and listen, gain what you don't know you don't know, you aren't at the table yet.
It's not meant as "I'mGod, sit down and shut up" or competitively. But that Stearn put you in your place and be quiet.
