Im looking to build an 18" 6 GT hunting rifle and im looking at what might be the ideal bullet for it. Im using the 108 eldm in my 6BRA hunting rifle right now for coyotes mostly and im definitely going to try them in the GT but with the short barrel i was considering going lighter to get a little more velocity and trying something like the 90TGK. What bullets should I be considering for this? My plan is to use this as an all around hunting rifle for big game and predators, I know there are some limitations when it comes to cartridge and barrel length but I dont plan on trying to take animals at extreme ranges with this set up

I have used 108 ELDMs for hunting, but now that I have them will be using 95 TMKs.

Not a 6 GT, but a 243.

I’m using the 108 ELDM with Varget and getting 2800fps from a 20” barrel. They kill well but they don’t leave much of a blood trail in my experience.

Just put together a 6GT also. I would lean toward the 95 TMK with a short barrel if you can get them to shoot. I tried both the 95 TMK and 90 TGK and the 90 was easier to tune but I wanted to try the 95 on WT. The 95 TMK was pretty devastating on the WT buck I took a few weeks ago.

What barrel length and velocity?

6dasher 16” sends the 95’s at 2800 with lever, just under with Varget.

I’d have built a GT but had convenience reasons for the dasher.

I’d shoot the 95tmk or 107TMK at 2800/2700 respectively out of a 16” GT all day. 500 yard gun no sweat.

I haven’t had a chance to look into the tmk’s a whole lot yet but whats the reasonable minimum velocity required for expansion?

Seems to me the bullet selection still depends more on the game.

Also, heavier and higher BC bullets might still have better maximum effective expansion range than lighter bullets, so the shorter barrel still doesn’t change the decision.

The standard minimum I always use is 1800 fps for reliability, but I prefer 2000 as my general limit. That’s where I plan to shoot for precision and ballistic reasons. But know I can go to 1800 in perfect conditions.

Hornady says 1600 fps for the ELDx, which is the most similar to the TMK and ELDm. They don’t publish or talk about the “tipped match bullets” for hunting. It’s funny to hear them tiptoe around it in podcasts.
