Would it be safe to assume that the “basic” RSS .223 Tikka is an 18” threaded barrel, Rokstok, and SWFA 6x scope? With suppressor of choice (I already have a Scythe, an OG, and a Griffin)?

What is the typical weight of the RSS .223 Tikka?

I shot 100 223 rounds this morning. Even going from 22 Creed or 243 with low recoil, and then shooting the 223, the amount you can “get away with” while maintaining “accuracy” and spotting shots with a short barrel suppressed 223 is honestly just stupid. Even in a 8.5 lb all in “hunting gun”.

Followed by Chonoing 25 rounds to see speed discrepancy with factory barrel and factory ammo and supressor so hot it was melting the cover inside material. Mirage so bad I could barely see the target but shot anyway. Spoiler alert, with Tikka barrel it doesn’t matter, current Revic Profile has 2740 set in it, chrono showing 2737 average.

The beauty of a .223. After Cliff and Jay use my .223 in the class it now has over 24,000 round on it. The barrel and suppressor have never been cleaned… oh my….

Can't hunt with the .223 either in WA, but it's 100% worth the investment.

Mine is around 9lbs loaded as it's set up here. Can't remember if that included a sling.

My 223 is what you described but with a 20” barrel, an ultra 7 and I believe it’s around 8.5lbs.

I like the 16” barrel I currently have. I’ve gone from 20” to 18” to now 16” on Tikka 223s and I think it’s the sweet spot for non over barrel suppressor. I’d go 18” if I used the OG, which I will be soon.

With the big 30 Cal can on mine, full of ammo, and scope cover on, it weighs right at 9lbs which is perfect weight for a mountain gun. Light enough to hand carry for miles and heavy enough to help mitigate recoil. Everyone thinks they need a sub 7lb “sheep rifle” to be able to hike with a gun in the back country, it’s weird.

The 16” barrel balances really well also where as 18” and 20” can be very nose heavy with suppressors. So off hand shots and general “pointing” of the gun onto targets from weird positions isn’t clumsy at all. You also get as the added benefit of being very comfortable/balanced to hand carry, as most of my hunting/backpacking/hiking is with rifle in hand.

With my 16” Tikka and 77 TMKs I end up with a just under 600 yard killing gun at mid DA with a 1.3 MIL hold over for a 90 degree 10 MPH wind. You can hold just off or at 1.5 hash mark and let it rip and be in vitals.

This is 3 back to back “cold bore shots” shooting off my pack at a steep angle 10” target, at the maximum killing range of that gun at sea level and 0 degrees, with a shifting 7-14 MPH wind.



Everyone likes to say they are “hesitant” to hunt with a 223 “because of the wind”. You can either read and call wind effectively or you can’t. The shooter is always the largest margin of error not the bullet BC or how much it “drifts” with wind.

what muzzle velocity are you getting with the 77gr otms? this is the factory barrel correct?

I wouldn’t either, it’s just not legal for deer in my state. I probably should have had the rifle chambered in 6mm ARC when I had the barrel replaced, but I really like 6.5mm Grendel.

Factory Tikka 8 twist blued barrel chopped to 16”, threaded, and re-crowned stabilized at around 100 rounds of suppressed shooting.

No matter the barrel temp and number of shots the strings on the Garmin will average around 2740 FPS for the foreseeable future with this lot of 77 TMK factory black hills 5.66 ammo.

Correction factors:


Rule of thumbs to get close first, and then how to get your actual correction factor for your gun specifically.


Standard base (average gun)=

100- 0
200- .5
300- 1
400- 2
500- 3
600- 4


So what happens when you have a combo that shoots faster than 2800’ish fps or slower than 2,500’ish with a low BC? General rule is “Bad Gun”, “Average Gun”, “Good Gun”.

Average is the standard above.

Bad= Add .5 mils past 300 to the base.

Good= Take .5 mils off the base past 300 from the base.

How I did @grappling_hook 270 combo is to use the corrections. The BC is .4...

Correct. But that is for full value winds. And you can divide.

What I generally suggest in the beginning which works just fine to 600’ish is the wind bracket, MPH divided by no more than half, and full value winds, half value, and no value.

You have a 5mph gun:

1). Range is 400 yards (base .4 right off the bat)

2). 10 mph wind ( 5 goes into 10 twice. So .4x2= .8 mil.

3). Left to right, full value

Correction is left .8 mils




Same gun and range but different wind value:

Thread 'How to use a mil/mil scope-reticle, turrets and proper usage'

I have gotten a bunch of requests to write up a "how to" for using mil reticle scoots. In this case the SWFA Milquad reticle. It is the 6x42mm SS with MQ reticle in the pictures, however the process and use is the same as long as you have a scope who's reticle matches the turret adjustments- mil/mil or MOA/MOA. Mil/mil has some advantages, but the system works regardless.
