I’m lookin into procuring some sort of weather meter. Ide spoke to Chris about this briefly. From what I could gather, wind speed and a means of obtaining an accurate DA are the only relevant features I should be focusing on. Are there any other features anyone finds useful? Are there any manufacturers other than Kestrel to look into? Also I would like to find a DA card like Form and the other instructors carry. I’m sure it’s on the internet somewhere, anyone know where to look?

Kestrel is a good tool but ballistics interface is dog shit. I basically only use it as an anemometer and as a backup means for determining DA.

Revic binos synced to phone has been fantastic for me in off season training. They’ve been spot on out to 1,200+ yards with at least 10 different guns.

I do still carry my laminated hard dope cards with a flip chart for different DAs, because the batteries never die on those, and I’ve used them for years and years so I’m fluid with them. These are in my Jeep that my wife has out today or I’d send a picture.

I made some black and white blown up versions of these cards for the Rokslide Arizona shooting days on 8-1/2x11 paper for the 4 or 5 guns I brought. Pretty neat and quick having hard dope handy and giving shooters come up and wind holds in real time, or having somebody grab a card and call dope/wind without having to load some profile when quickly switching between guns.

I found the DA card here...

Kestrel 5500 5000 is I believe the lowest model that includes DA. It’s the one I went with.

It does not have a ballistics calculator. But frankly Kestrel UI sucks anyway beyond simple weather metering.

Edit: correction for unit number

You may be able to get away with a DA chart and a basic cheap wind meter (Amazon)

Kestrel 5000 is the least expensive with DA and the one I chose. No ballistics. For a field solution beyond quick drops I use my Revic BLR10B binos.

Brunton used to make the ADC Pro weather meter that was simple and inexpensive, but it’s discontinued.

Has anyone tried pairing a Sig Kilo 3K rangefinder with a kestrel to get ballistics? I have found that the sensors onboard the rangefinder are usually way off. I have to go into the Sig app, manually type in the temperature, and then my solutions seem to be much more accurate.

Any other brunton models that give DA?

I have and it made them way more accurate.

I’m using applied ballistics, getting DA and environmental conditions through my garmin watch.

I have an old basic kestrel 3500 for occasional wind readings

Have you compared the watch to another device like the Kestrel to see if the watch is close?

Once it’s calibrated they are nearly identical. So much nicer having AB on the watch face. Just have to change the yardage. You can also sync the garmin watch to most ballistics apps like Revic and AB to pull environmental data.

Sometimes I’ll do that at the trailhead and screenshot my dope as a back up. Set it as my Home Screen picture

Edit: looks like not every model is compatible however truflight is another option that is compatible with most garmin watches

I agree with Chris. Ballistics on kestrel are nice as a sanity check and typically have more accurate enviros than the onboard in RF binos but I very seldomly use mine for ballistics. I do think it's probably the best way to get a dope card for exact conditions at a given time but that is seldom useful in hunting or field shooting cases as it is not remotely quick. Nice for a PRS stage with known target locations, distances, and time to fiddle around with a kestrel before being on the clock.

I rely on the ballistic engine in my RF more than I probably should but that is my "DA Card" - its reading the DA when I range and it's giving me a solution. Not the best DA as carrying binos on your chest vs them being in open air impacts things a bit but also close enough for me on any shot I should be taking at an animal (inside 500 yds).

Re: Kestrel

I bought a 5000 based on Twiddy's recommendation.

I got the non linking one.

It's been perfect for what I do.

I edited the settings so the start up screen only shows current temp, wind and DA.

That's all I do with it. Turn it on, check, put it up. 10 second activity.
