For those of you that have shipped things up as opposed to flying them, what totes did you use and how did you secure them? Thanks!

I'd highly recommend the Rubbermaid roughneck totes. I've seen far too many of the hard plastic totes get broken up. Drill holes through the lid and top of the tote and secure with heavy zip ties

Rubbermaid is the way to go. The black and yellows crack easier if cold, frozen or packed with a frozen cape or meat. As others stated, drill holes, use zip ties and duck tape extra zip ties inside incase someone opens it, it can be re-tied.

We used a big Husky Tote from Home Depot last year. Ours had two wheels on one end. It just barely met size limit for flying. Shippers will also have size limits, so measure carefully.

We also drill extra holes in the rim and use zip ties. Gorilla tape can help as well. A couple other things we’ve learned: Pack it 101% full so there’s no airspace below the lid. Soft items in contact with the lid. Run strips of duct tape or Gorilla tape across the flat of the lid, inside and out. These measures will help a lot in avoiding cracks in the lid.

When flying with an oversized bin, use up the entire allowance for size and weight. No 51 lb baggage for me. If I’m over, I’m WAY over. I also try to be under the maximum size for both the airline and USPS. That just gives me more options on the return trip. And yes, I use a tape measure when shopping for bins.

Also, you didn’t ask, but the Pelican Vault double rifle case holds a shipload of gear as well. I took out most of the foam and put my rifle in a padded soft case inside. Clothes, sleeping bag and even my Barney’s pack frame fit inside as well. And inventory every last item in each case. If a bin gets lost, you need to know EXACTLY what you’re missing.

Another vote for the 31g rubbermaid roughneck totes. These things last forever, and multiple can be stacked to ship up together (still under the size limits for airlines), and will hold nearly 100lbs of meat on way back if successful.

Did you check these totes or did you ship them via Alaska air cargo? I’m sending everything up via air cargo with the HDX totes and now I’m slightly concerned

I loaded 2 red and black HD totes with moose meat and shipped AK cargo home. 2 yrs later I shipped then back on a caribou hunt but on the way back both lids cracked and one bottom cracked. I guess it depends on how the are handled in transit. I’ll be using Rubbermaid this yr on my moose hunt.

Yeah I was just going to ship them up ahead of time. Looks like I'll spend the extra money for quality totes.

I was thinking about packing stuff in one but have 4 stacked together then use the other 3 to bring back capes and meat, something along these lines. But can't find alot of info about flying meat back from canada

the best prices i have found for rubbermaid roughneck totes has been as Target stores. amazon and online retailers are more than double the price of target.
