I have the 5900. I originally bought the 3300 and 5900. I sold the 3300 because I can make that 5900 do anything from day pack to week long. I love that bag. With that bag and the lid an can configure for anything.

Not to try to complicate matters, but what are thoughts about the 40/56 to do both day pack and extended (5-7 day) trips?

Does a Nalgene actually fit in these pockets? From the pics on their website it looks like the pockets are too shallow but some pics on this thread got me wondering?

So I picked up a Sky 5900 and can confirm the side pocket does in fact hold a Nalgene. Its not tight but if you cinch down the compression strap it holds plenty tight.

Just sold my R3 (same volume as solo 3300) and took the money straight to stone glacier and bought a sky 5900. It will take a hunting season to determine if I made the right move but what annoyed me the most about the R3 was the design of the beavertail opening. Everytime I opened it more than a third of the way while the pack was laying down, stuff slid out. Hopefully the higher sides of the 5900 will keep this from happening when I open the pack by it's front loader zipper. I also like having the external "water bottle" pockets on both sides so that I can balance a load on the exterior. I don't believe they will hold nalgenes well though. I'm also looking forward to the vertical zippered pocket, snow collar opening and lid. I just think the 5900 is a better do it all pack with the volume and ability to carry more gear. I bought the R3 with the intentions of it being mainly a day hunting pack and it just didn't work for me, so I decided to get a bigger bag for extended hunting while using my kifaru 22 mag for day hunts.

That's cool, will be interested to see how you like the 5900. I have the solo, which I think doesnt zip open quite as much as the R3, and I have not had the problem you have described. I can fit 4 days of food and gear in there without using any extra space or load shelf, but I dont have a spotter or tripod to worry about. Looking forward to the arrival of my dry bag to store food in and open up more space in the pack.

Yea me too. I'm looking forward to the attributes of the 5900. I also should mention a lot of my camping gear is bulky and not as compact and lightweight as it could be. Makes it harder for me to use a smaller bag like the R3 or 3300 for camping. Eventually I will be able to replace enough gear to be lightweight and compact, I'm just not there yet. I do also always take a tripod and a crazy creek chair, even if just day hunting. I have the stone glacier dry bag and have used it between the bag and frame. Works awesome! I think you will like it as well.

Yeah. I have a 6200, that I picked up here so I have a bigger bag for when I might need it, such as when my kids come along. It is a nice bag but I think the 5900 would be slicker with its horshoe zip instead of side zip. Post pictures when you get some miles on it!

I’ve had both and prefer the 5900 for the panel zip. Both are nice. I just like the 5900 a bit more when it’s tightened up in bivy mode.

Stone Glaciers customer service is top notch. Made in America. I could get 5-7 days crammed into the 3300(no winter gear). Bought the Access bag for the extra 900 cbi but never used it. Sold it all and wish I had not. 5100cbi would be perfect Im thinking. Not an option so I'm prolly gonna try the 5900. Real happy with SG stuff
