Here in the saltbelt trucks last maybe 5 yrs. i just bought a new Silverado and im contemplating buying an older suv for salty roads and trips out west.

Thoughts?

i live in the mountains of NC. i bought a cheap Nissan frontier put a camper cover on it and rolled on. My powerstroke sits 95% of the time. its a 4.5 hour trip each way to where i hunt and i do that trip just about every other weekend from September to end of april (we fish alot to). i gave up some comfort but also have less than a grand in the truck and have drove it for 2 years now.

You drive 9 hours to hunt every other weekend? I hope your walls are absolutely loaded if thats the case cause that is some dedication.

I would go for it then. Keep that expensive new truck in the garage and looking good. Then when you are ready to upgrade that one, your current Silverado becomes your hunting rig. Keep cycling through them. That is what I would do.

yep round trip. alot of times im leaving 5:30 getting there 10:30-11 depending on traffic, hunt Saturday and Sunday. if i kill on Sunday i may not get back home till 2-3 am. To me its worth it to spend time with my best friend and the hunting is way better than where i live.

Tough time to buy used cars. Buy something from down south if you can. one of those Texas highway queen trucks that see a lot of miles and Armour all but not a lot of mud and dirt. No salt. Worth the $500 or so it will cost to have it shipped.

big fan of Toyota. Tundra and Tacoma depending on the size you want. i had a Nissan that was good to me too.

I think you are spot on

Well heck, that didn't even last 5 years.....LOL.

I know a guy that wants to sell his 2017 Ram Cummins with 120k miles on it. I offered him $30k and he laughed. So I said "what do you think it's worth"? He replied "Well I paid $64k for it". Knowing that vehicles generally lose 50% of their value the first 3-4 years, I then offered him $32k. He still laughed. Oh well. He'll sell it for more in this covid crazy world we have now.......but not to me.

I would like to get a cheap older 4runner or Tacoma for this purpose. For me it comes down to maintenance. Its easier to neglect something that isn't your daily driver. Having an additional vehicle that you can beat the crap out of and not worry is really nice. My uncle had a cheap old Pathfinder that he got for 700 bucks. We hunted for a couple years out of it, beat it up and he sold it for 500 bucks.

Cheap and Toyota don’t go together!

Just sold my wife’s 08 Lexus recently, 4 runners and Tacos the same year are going for more!

5 years…seriously?

We live in central Missouri which is borderline salt belt and have family in Iowa and northern Illinois. Just about everyone in the family drives 5-15 year old cars and trucks.

We drive them too and they are full of rust.

Northern IN = lake effect snow = calcium and salt

Always a good idea to have a dedicated hunting truck if you ask me. I actually call it my deer/trash truck.
Mine is a 1997 Tacoma. Has 220k on it now. Take it anywhere and everywhere. Hell if it’s too chilly to take a 4 wheeler ride, the wife and I just take it. I’m asked a lot how much I’d take for it. I used to say $8500 just to get them to leave me alone. I’ve recently upped that number cause I’m afraid someone would take me up on it.
Will agree that this is not the time to be looking to buy a truck. I’ve been looking for a new (to me) main truck. $40k for a 3-4 year old used truck is a stupid price. Problem is, who knows if or when this will end.
Good luck on your search.
