It was crazy hot in Wyoming this week, but I still got one bull to play with me on Saturday. I watched a video seminar with Elknut last week about an early season bugling/rattling sequence he's used. I brought in some large muley sheds, snuck in close to a bedding area and was able to call this guy in to 25 yards.

Super hot and quiet here. 4 days. Haven’t heard a bugle seen an elk. Tough.

Canvas cutter views don’t suck though.

Been after elk since 9-2. Blessed with elk camp less than 2 hours from home, so I can’t claim I’ve been up there full time. Home now(second time) for a night or two. My home herd.

Been very close to closing the deal on a couple elk since the storm. Ended up getting 8+” of snow and it is melted on the sunny sides. I can move nearly silent thru the timber with the wet ground, and stalked within 30 yards of a big cow yesterday. Nocked and locked i was just waiting for her to take a step out. Wind shifted hard the dreaded “Bark” from her and gone. Along with 4 others I had not seen.

I’m getting into elk and a lot of fresh sign within a mile of our roads. There are some bruiser bulls down on the private land boundaries that would earn me a 3 k foot vertical pack out. I’m a meat hunter anymore and mostly solo. Nope.
Already itching to head back up. Gotta cut grass and some other domestic duties. Good to have some decent meals. Been pushing hard and not eating as much as usual. Lost 8 lbs thus far, and I’m sure caffeine and Copenhagen are not in any food groups.

I watched a couple guys after I spooked the small herd. Muzzle hunters. Pretty sure they heard my cow calling. I wasn’t gonna chase those elk into the steep deep drainage so I was backing out when I heard them coming in. Sounded like elk busting thru, then I saw the orange. Poor dudes were struggling but they saw all the fresh tracks and were going to follow them, knee high muck boots and all. They made it about 100 yards and turned back. Then they found out how slick the mud/snow is. Must’ve fallen down four times on the steep stuff. Never saw me.

I have stuck to my vow of no more walking blowdown like some tightrope walker. No need test the SOS on the Garmin.
Last year I broke the vow too much.

Anyway, I have to get busy here. Best luck to all.

2020 is shaping up to be one heck of an experience. I've always dreamt of hunting elk and being a Missouri resident, this obviously isn't possible without hunting out of state. This year I will have the opportunity to elk hunt Idaho on a disabled veteran non-resident tag. I will be going with 2 other disabled vets and am looking forward to the experience. We have yet to pick a unit as we have no first hand knowledge of the area and only one of us have ever been elk hunting before but I'm excited nonetheless.

Best of luck to you and everyone else this year!
Thanks for your service!

Opening day of muzzleloader in Colorado was a success! I couldn’t have had a better time. Wasn’t hearing any bugles, so I decided to sit watching a meadow for the evening. Came out at 160 yards 5 minutes before shooting light ended, and fed his way straight to me for a 40 yard shot. I watched him drop after running 100 yards, and we started the packout process. 4 hours and 2.5 miles later, we were loaded up and headed back to town!

Chased the herd uphill and when I had them just in sight, two more groups of 6 came following Me up! Put a lucky 30 yard heart shot on this guy. Dropped after 40 yards. The 23 1/2 hour pack out was brutal but I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Called this bull in to 15 yards. Shot him with a 338, might have been overkill, but he came in pretty hot and heavy to the Cow call I was using, so I was happy it wasn't a 6.5, and that he only took 1 step. It was the 2nd to last day of my first Elk hunt, I'm hooked, what an incredible experience. Watching him sneak into the clearing and then start raking a big fir tree all within 15 yards was something that I hope I never forget.

Nice job you guys!! Keep posting up the stories!! Really quiet here in Idaho. The grind is real. Real tiring. Lol. 1 bull to bugle in last 5 days. More people than I’ve seen anywhere.
