anyone have input on these releases? I'd prefer to spend that money on a Stan or carter, but using a cabelas gift card limited my options.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I do shoot a Carter Wise Choice and a Stan Onnex and I like the donut hole for the index finger on the Carter but looking over the Scott Apex Core,it has a lot going for it. I would not be afraid to spend my money on one. I just bought a Scott Longhorn Pro Micro Hinge a few days ago and that thing is sweet. I am loving it. Scott makes a good product. I believe I would be just as happy with the Apex Core. I also have the Scott S2 index release and can't say enough good about it either. Pull out that gift card!

i've been shooting this for a few days now, and it drives me nuts that you have to manually lock the jaws shut. theres a button to engage the lock, but it fumbling my fingers around the d-loop and the jaws to shut it worries me if i have to ever be quick about it. Am i doing this wrong? Otherwise, it shoots great.

Look at the video by Riley at Lancaster Archery Supplies when you click on the Apex. He explains the hook up of the release. The video may help you. I thought my Stan Onex was a pain to hook onto the D loop but like everything else, you'll get used to it and find a way that works for you. I don't see how you could have trouble. The Apex is an open hook release and it has an auto return, also a locking button. Use your thumb on the locking buttton, then just run the hook onto the D loop.
Here is that video:
