Scope Shifted Zero

What I'm saying is that when knocked off they could be wildly off and then walk back towards the zero with that missing shot and subsequent shots and then not be horrifically off after that. The missing shot is the proverbial tapping of the turret that is too common at the range to get a POS scope to settle. When they settle they settle back around the zero (in his case 2" off), but don't hold zero between sessions.

Yeah, I have seen stuff like that with a Leupold and a broken old Weaver. But in my case I knew where the “way off target shot” hit.

These things aren't static, when a POS scope does POS scope stuff they don't get knocked off and then stay off the same amount. If the scope was off, sometimes subsequent shots will bring it back towards the original zero.

Agree. Thus the reason for my inquiry. Nothing makes sense. Scope was randomly 2 MOA to the right at 100 yards. No shift in elevation MOA. Dialed 2 MOA to the left. However, still about 1 MOA off to the right which is the only error I can reproduce. Anyhow, I ran the turrets from that zero. 6 MOA left and 6 MOA up, then 12 MOA right and 6 MOA down, then back to zero. Final zero shot doubled the original POI when I started the test. The only thing that makes sense is, "POS scope does POS scope stuff." That's been my conclusion but experience comes from mistakes. I'm hoping to check all my boxes. Taperpin recommended checking the bedding which I will do. I threw a new scope on it and need to zero anyhow.

Any chance he clipped some vegetation from prone that maybe you didn't see?

I missed a cow this year at 275. Prone, rear bag, bipod. Shot felt great. I confirmed the gun and killed several animals with including one over double that range.

I shot through some grass when I missed and may have really underestimated how much that little bit of grass may have affected my bullet.

Did he dial or hold for elevation or wind? Any chance of compounding oops, like wrong wind, wrong hold, wrong dial, plus scope being off?

Also, maybe I missed it, but why didn't he send a second?

Dialed for elevation only. No windage dial or hold. No one is perfect but my son is a very solid shot. He is 17 now and has hunted since he was 10 and has been shooting since he was 4. He clean missed from 235 yards was an immediate red flag. Prone, proper rest, relaxed, not a rushed shot. No reason for a clean miss from that distance. When he told me the shot felt clean > I believe him. He was perplexed, as was I, he commented something doesn't seem right. I'm glad I listened. We may have avoided wounding an animal.

This scope, prior to this, was solid. Tracked well ect. Never dropped or abused.

I own an array of scopes ranging from 'I really trust this one' to 'I don't trust this one at all'. There's actually a Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 in there, too, but it's on a .22lr now where it can't cause much drama.

I say that to say this:

"It worked until it didn't" is the exact story most of us have had, about at least one scope. It worked great. Checked all our boxes. Then one day, it didn't.

Im coming off this kind of thing. Had buck at last minute, couldnt see him thru scope. Pizzed me off.

Trying to determine if i “need an $1,800 scope”, need a green light, of need a thermal clip on. They all make sense in one form or another.

Sorry yer boy didnt get the critter. Sux that some scopes fail. I believe that your son can shoot better than me and im not gonna miss intentionally at all.

Don't blame you at all. I'm replacing a Leupold vx6hd that has been solid for years with a nightforce on my main hunting rifle for peace of mind. We work to hard for a shot opportunity to have equipment failures ruin them.
