I'm about to take possession of a custom .338 Win. It's built on a Winchester M70 classic CRF with a McMillan stock and Shilen barrel. Rifle will be used for Moose, Grizz/Brown bears in Alaska and Canada, Elk in the lower 48 and hopefully an Africa trip or two when I retire! Choose a scope and mounting system and explain why.

Leupold VX3i, 2.5-8x, heavy duplex, Leupold dual dovetail mounts. Good power range to match the capabilities of the cartridge, excellent, durable scope and mounts. Not the trick-of-the-week stuff the fanboys promote, but has been and will continue to be fully capable and trouble free.

I'll second what long barrel said. That is what I run on mine except not a heavy duplex. Dual dovetail mounts are problem free for the most part. 2.5-8 power is plenty to 500 yds.

I drank the 2.5-8 Leupy Kool Aid once....was less than impressed. It's 2019. Better options out there in my opinion. Better mounts than DDs also.

I like Xs. 8X left me wanting every time.

What's your price range? The Nightforce SHV 3-10 with illuminated Force Plex would be a very difficult scope to pass over.

I would want a tough, super dependable scope with low magnification for close range, but also enough to reach out.

I like the idea of the Nightforce NXS 2.5-10x42 or the NX8 1-8x24 for that setup.

Spend your money on experience before you spend it on fancy gear.

I've really been liking my SHV 3-10 with the illuminated forceplex reticle, It's fairly compact and light for what it is, very durable, the reticle is excellent and you can dial if you want (I don't dial much, I'm not a long range hunter).

Keep in mind this is a 22" sporter weight #3, long action Win 70. Mounting restrictions do exist and short tubed scopes like the 2.5x8x36 Leupold or the 2.5x10 Nightforce wont cut it short of a picatinney rail...None of which will be considered for this rifle!

Additionally, back up irons (NECG) will be part of the package so quick detach via tools or levers should be given serious consideration.
