Looking for a good scope for a xbolt 300wsm. Max range would be around 500 yards. Had good luck with a Leupy vx5. Might go with that again. Was also looking at the vx6, Zeiss v6 and Trijicon. It will be strapped to a pack so taking a bump or two would be important. Be good in low light also. Anything else to look at before I make a decision? Thanks in advance!

the Maven RS 1.2s have my attention if I were looking to buy now. I put a Nightforce NXS 2.5x10 on mine. Doesn't seem like a lot of magnification, but it's enough to find the vitals at your distance. and it's light.

I shot my elk at 400 this year, no problems. I practice at the range at 600 and can get it done. On some of the smaller plates it's a little light on magnification, but it's a good scope and holds zero.

May be other cheaper options out there, but this one has done me well on my Model 70 300 WSM

Not much of a rifle guy compared to some here but I have been on hunts where vortex and Leopolds failed for other hunters. One was on a pretty pricey elk trip. That sent me towards nightforce. You pay more and they are heavy but they work and can stand some abuse.

Have the same gun in the same caliber. Went with a NF NX8 4-32 from Cameraland and have been super happy. Started shooting to 600 yards and the extra mag helps a ton.

That caliber is used on the f class circuit and guys will ring targets out to 1000.

I have 3 300wsm rifles. They wear: swfa 3-9hd, nx8 and a meopta/conquest

I'd never run a vx series scope on any rifle that has more recoil than a 22lr or is going to ride on a atv. They just don't have a good history....and a 300wsm can bark pretty hard.

I am by no means an expert, but I have found the Maven rs1.2 to be an excellent fit for my 300wsm. I took this bull @ 550 yds off my pack and it was more than enough magnification to make the shot. The glass is clear and the reticle is great for hunting applications. I am a huge fan of the small center dot illumination also. For the price, weight, and zero retention all of my hunting setups will be be wearing one of these soon1000005509.jpg

I guess if you build 5 million Leupolds and 150,000 of anything else you will certainly have a higher % of failures at some point for some reason. I mean, math is math. I have Leupolds and NF scopes....they both have their place. A 30oz, or even a 20oz scope does not belong on a superlight rig...it's defeating the purpose. I have a NF 5.5-22x50 on a CA FFT TI in 7prc and it handles like shit....really top heavy and wonky.

How is your ability to spot shots with the 300wsm and Rokstock?
This setup was really an effort to try and minimize recoil/ muzzle jump in a magnum .30 cal. with a suppressor not a brake. If I'm on a bench or prone in the 6-8x magnification range it is possible for me to spot shots if I do my part. Much, much more possible than my 700cdl 300 win mag with no muzzle device. It will never be as good as a .223 or 6mm though. I also tried this rokstok with a 7 saum and 22-250 and can say that it was an improvement in spotting shots in all three. The e-brake installed on nomad Ti suppressor works better the more powder that is behind it...I noticed it much more on the 300wsm vs the 22-250 if that makes sense. The Avery/Form school seem to know what they are doing so I sort follow their lead on things with a "trust but verify" mentality. Ryan was running his "Pug" setup when I started this build so that's why 300wsm. If I was building it today I would probably be doing it in 6UM and take advantage of the reduced recoil to spot impacts even better. I'm still very satisfied with the .300 wsm build and will be keeping it until the barrel is toast. Hope this helps.
