I’ve been in the closer than I thought he was scenario and it sucks when it happens, me and my buddy ended up in the middle of what seemed like 5-6 bulls just hammering out bugles before daylight one morning 2016, we had bulls responding just above us and below when out of nowhere one squealed out what seemed about 75 yds in front of us in thick cover, I thought it was gonna be a raghorn by the way it sounded.......anyway he was on top of us before we were really ready and just from what we seen out of the other bulls this turned out to be the herd bull, really screwed us up, we had no idea he was that close and by the sound of that weak squeal we just never dreamed it was the bull we were after, really sucked when he was standing there looking for us and we couldn’t move........you never forget those encounters.....

I usually try to cut the distance making some noise braking bigger branches trying to sound like and elk. When I get to where I want to be I'll start raking. If I'm not hearing anything I'll hit a few light cow calls. If still nothing and I know he's still there I'll sneak in. If I think he moved on I'll rip a bugle. I don't give up if I'm on one. I'll do my best to piss him off so he'll finally want to play if he's being hard headed.
