Savage Rifles... which is their top gun?

I am probably going to buy the Savage 16 lightweight, very soon... but as I peruse their website and look at the pages and pages of bolt actions they offer, I am left wondering which model is supposed to be their top gun? They have 10s, 11s, 14s, 16s... and all sorts of things in between and variations!

Is one of them a more polished version?

Thanks for some discussion!!

The 16/116 FCSS is their top end stainless synthetic. They have their specialty series too which has a few that are based on that model. They're great rifles. Have some nice features like the 3 position tang safety and and Accustock and Accutrigger. The FCSS also has the detachable box mag. And they shoot well.

The 16 lightweight hunters I've seen weren't quite as nice in the fit and finish department. Still a very solid rifle overall though.

I agree with Huntinkat, I believe the 16 is the "higher"end. It has a pillar bedded stock but I think action & barrel are the same.
I recently picked up a model 11. Shoots great but don't like the triple safety. The rest I am trying to get used to.

The 1xx is long action the 1x is short. 16 or 116 is stainless. 14 or 114 are classics. 11 and 111 will be blued or matte. 12 and 112 are heavy barrel models. Most of the 10 110s are tactical. That is just the numbering system. Then you get into the lettering system. These are just generalizations. They are constantly changing and adding. I wouldn't say any of the number designators are an indication of "higher end" models. The "higher end" models will be the benchrest/fclass rifles and the HS Precision rifles and will have specific lettering system.

Appreciate the opinions and info. Functionally maybe not a ton of diff... but the $275 axis must be somewhat different than the $900 16fcss....

Accustock? Anything special going on there?

The HS precision and the McMillan are not my gig, I'm looking for a general purpose, mountain gun. The LRH "might" fit the bill...

Yah you are correct, the FCSS ( I think they were calling it the weather warrior ?) has a lot more going on over the base Axis.
With the 16/116 you can choose between the classic long or short savage open top actions whereas the axis all use the same action length. The base axis has no accutrigger, no accustock, etc.

I have a 30-06 axis my buddy has an 06 in the fcss 116, both guns shoot better than MOA, the axis is lighter. The 116 feels a lot less "cheap."

I think you are spot on for a mountain gun in looking at the 16 LWH, for what its worth though, my axis all up scope/bullets/sling is still under 8lbs.

Is that your Axis? Aftermarket stock?

The Accustock provides a solid full length aluminum bed for the action & is well regarded as probably the best 'factory' stock going. However it is heavy. Compared to the standard 'Tupperware' there's (iirc) around 9oz difference.

The Axis has a horrible, horrible stock but my God is it accurate! The whole manufacture is far cheaper than the standard 10/11/12/16 etc & they're all long actions, but the barrel & bolt head is exactly the same. The trigger is identical to the old non-accutrigger models. The magazine is identical. Mostly the bolt body & action tube is different. I personally prefer the action. It's only a 2-position safety.

New stock or same just painted? New bolt handle. New barrel.
Good shooter?

Here's a custom I built on an Axis action.

Boyd's stock, heavily cut down, carbon bolt handle, fluted bolt, rebarrelled to 6.5x55

It's been my go-to deer, coyote & antelope gun for the past 2 years. It'll shot 140VLDs into ¾" & 100gn A-max into ¼" at 100yds.

Sorry, edited as you were posting!

Not including the scope & after selling off the bits I took off, I'm into this (bought used as a .30-06) for about $400 & it weighs in at 7lb 11oz loaded. Not a real lightweight, but one of the first I completely built from parts.

So that's a Boyd laminate?
What kind of barrel?
No machining on the action?
They have floating bolt head too?

My other Axis is bog-stock (other than a severely abbreviated barrel) in .223.

It shoots 62gn SGKs in boringly regular 3/8" groups.

Yep, Boyd's Classic I picked up as a second & dipped. Bisongunworks barrel (X-caliber blank) I'd call it a 'heavy sporter' profile. It's a good deal heavier than Savage's sporter, but lighter than a medium profile.
Action wasn't touched.
Yep, floaty bolt head.

Yah that's my Axis II ( base model Axis but with the accutrigger).

I sold the Weaver Kaspa it came with and put a zeiss terra in leupold rings on. The Z6 reticle is super quick and bang on out to 600 yds for the 30-06.

The stock is now DIY Camo but in those pics it was painted with speckled texture paint.

The great part of having a cheap gun is you can Eff around with paint/mods etc without worrying about it too much. And as Robtattoo mentioned, they are super accurate little guns.
That group pic is actually 6 shots

Good info all. Thank you! Have me thinking about playing with an Axis too!!

Savages are addictive. Once you start customizing it's hard to stop.

You are going to find a lot more aftermarket stuff for the 10/110 series than Axis.

Stevens 200's are the same as 10/110 essentially.
