I’m going to be hunting in Montana for the 1st time. Looking at renting a garmin inreach mini 2. Anyone have any other suggestions for Sat phones?

I rented a sat phone for a hunt a couple years ago. It was the first time using one and it’s nothing like they make it out in the movies. The reception isn’t great but it does work. As for messaging Zoleo or the iPhone messaging works good but is temperamental at times.

Rogers in Canada offers satellite phone service that works with mobile phones, reportedly without restriction on your current cellular carrier. I think US carriers should offer similar services as well.

No sat phone/voice capability, but shameless plug, I have two Zoleos for sale.

Basically the same are inreach with a few difference.
Very cheap way to get in and you can deactivate or suspend plans when not in use.

I would be nervous to rely only on cell phone.. We did a 8 day trip in the Thorofare Wilderness and one guy was using only his iPhone and day 6, his phone locked him out and wanted him to sign into his account, which he couldn't do without service... Also the sos dispatching is significantly better with Garmin or Zoleo.
