Wondering about snowfall in the mountains close by salmon within an hour of salmon….

What’s the snow level like around 6500’ in mid-late October

Feel free to pm, looking to bounce a few questions regarding weather off a local or someone who frequents the area

Thanks!
Jake

Highly variable from year to year. Early snow (Oct) had become less common over the last 20 years. You’ll have to wait until closer to October to get any reliable info. We’re currently having a very low snow year in most of Idaho

I was just in Challis a couple weeks ago and there was very little snow on the mountains I was on. I had a tag several years ago just south of Salmon and there was little to no snow in November. I don't think either of those experiences are the norm though.

I will say that the salmon area gets cold but it’s a dry cold without a lot of snow most years, in my experience it isn’t a major snow zone, I remember driving through that area back in the winter of 2016/17 when SW Idaho was buried under 2 feet of snow and for the most part the Salmon/Challis areas had little more than a dusting in the valleys

What a weird way for you to flex drawing my elk tag out from under me!!

In all seriousness, I have been there in late October and the only snow I ran into was way high. Each year is subject to change though.

As others have indicated, it is rare that snow will be an issue at that elevation in October. If I were hunting that area, my biggest concern would be wildfire this summer/fall. Snowpack is abysmal so far this year. It is looking like this summer will be very dry. Two years ago there were a couple fires up there and much of the area was closed until the last week of October.
