Sako 90 quest

How are 20" threaded 5/8", 8 twist barrels in .243 and 6.5 CM "stuck in the 90's" on these guns?

I agree with the Tikka at a lower price and in a Rokstok for sure, but if someone wants to spend the money on a Sako they aren't losing anything to the Tikka at all save stock ergos being better on the Rokstok.

Still too long. Still have to chop and thread again. Same with the new threaded tikkas.
Half a decade late and still a dollar short.

Eurooptic has the peak marked down to $2800-$2900 now. I have been wanting to try one for a while.

A Tikka is not any more reliable or accurate than a Sako. The only thing that is "potentially" more reliable between the two is the single stack versus double stack mag, and even then, in 10's of thousands of rounds through Sakos with double stack mags, there hasn't been any issues with any of mine.

For the rem700, you can build some nice guns off of those, but for dedicated field/hunting rifles I stay away from them for known reasons.

I like the upside of a Sako 90 action too.

The safety on a Sako 90 locks the firing pin. I think that’s superior to the Tikka design.

I like some of the features better as well, such as the adjustable trigger reach and lighter bolt lift.

Maybe some of the other features aren’t “superior” but given the choice I’ll take dual ejectors, shorter bolt lift, true short action, adjustable trigger weight, even smoother action, and a three lug bolt every time.

I mean the T3X has proven itself for sure, but the 90 has a lot going for it from what I can see.

Thoughts on that?

Barrel length is personal. Not everyone uses a can. I’ll never own a bolt gun with a barrel shorter than 20”. 20” is too short

Yup, I can add a couple things.

The scope mounting on integral picatinny a bonus, no joint variable to consider between bases and action. I find Tikka scope mounting a pain to get natural alignment to factory sporter stock.

Being able to treat it exactly as a hinged floor plate rifle in terms of top feeding ease which is super handy at the range but quick top ups anytime in field.

The magazine being flush and two more rounds than Tikka for all day handling and hunting ease, one handed carry guys will appreciate but capacity for flush fit.

Also materials, including magazine, all stainless or aluminum, sling studs included. No plastic anywhere I can find.

How’s the resale on those bastardized kit guns?

Trigger reach has a hair over 1/4” (7mm) adjustment range. And the world record lock time may not be noticeable but nice to know.

I built a Tikka 20” 308 alongside my peak 308. At similar weight the Sako is zero fafo and recoil management is better, don’t think about shooting it, the tikka you feel and notice every single shot. And the tikka is still relegated to a project, trip to smith for barrel chop, aftermarket bottom metal. I’m not sure when I’ll finish it but you have to build one up to even come close to Sako and it will always lack a bunch of the above mentioned features and benefits even when you sort out a better stock, bottom metal, and scope mounting solution. Kit gun vs ‘perfection’, same can be said for 700’s.

If you like projects there’s plenty. Far fewer out of the box options at this level of not just qc/finish but overall features, materials and design.

I still like Tikka a lot and recommend them almost exclusively. But they are not comparable other than reliable and accurate. Different levels and the Sako as high as you’ll go for anything you can find off the shelf and put together at kitchen table and get shooting and hunting right away.

I’m indifferent in this one as I haven’t had any issues with the Tikka design.

Other than this being an “unknown” with potential for maybe some field issues I agree.

It’s a great gun. Like I said, if a guy was wanting to spend money on a “done” rifle the Sakos are an accurate reliable option. If a guy wants to tweak and make it “his own” then Tikka is the way. Or if someone wants to spend 1/3 of the money and roll with a solid gun. It’s really hard to beat a Tikka in a Rokstok. If Sako had a stock design similar to the Rokstok it would be very tempting for the reasons you’ve stated.

Thoughts on that?

Overall, I own more Tikkas than Sakos now for a reason. But that’s not to say that my Sakos aren’t fantastic guns.

It’s quite a bit more modern than the tikka, higher butt end with negative comb. Conservative compared to rokstok but an improvement you can see and feel shooting back to back on factory Tikka at same load and rifle weight.

And yeah Tikka more of a fleet gun. I only wanna use the 90 though so no fleet needed. Kids can run the other stuff and find their own grail later in life.

Yes, 3 lug. 6 o’clock lug picks up the rounds from the double stack. Like AIAW

My money has been spent elsewhere, but I think the answer is the low priced Sako 90 put in a walnut Rokstock cut and threaded for under 4K.
