Sako 85 Ejection Issues?

Just got a new Sako 85 in .270 and I’ve heard there are ejection issues with them that cause the rounds to hit the scope. Anyone know about this?

Any remedies or advice?

Hey man, if you using optilocks and have something with a windage turret it can happen but not all the time.

I have a carbonlite .223 with a vx5 on it and it hits it and bounces back into the action maybe one in 25 rounds, preddy easy to give it a flick even prone and it flys on out of the action, seems to always land in backwards too

Got one in 30 06. Never had an issue.

This issue is a bit overblown. This mainly happens when people shoot on a bench and very gingerly cycle the bolt. When field shooting and hunting and cycling the bolt harder at normal speed I’ve never seen it happen. I own/owned I think it’s 7 Sako 85s. Great rifles.

The issue is well known on the 85’s but tend to be worse with the longer actions and larger turret scopes.

The best solution is to buy a Sako 90 because they addressed the issue going from 1 to 2 plunger ejection.

I’ve had a few 85’s… the only ejection issues I had were on a few of the short actions.

Cycle the bolt more aggressively. The only time it ever happened to me was when I ran the gun like the bench rest shooters and barely cycled the thing.

Thanks for the response. It happens to me every time I slowly cycle the bolt and I even if I I do it aggressively it still has a 50/50 chance of ejecting or not.

It’s hitting the scope tube itself. It would not eject at all even with my Trijicon Huron 3-9x40 and I had to rotate it 90 degrees.

Dealing with this right now with a new to me Sako 85 300wsm. I have to have rounds in the mag to clear my rail but then it hits the windage turret. If I just single feed rounds in then it hits my rail and almost never ejects the round. I already have added padding to my stock to get my eye high enough for the scope so higher rings aren’t appealing to me at all. I had the identical rifle in a 22-250 and had zero ejection issues with that rifle. Disappointed.

This is something that has plagued the model. I had a .375 I sold to a friend, same issue. Sako sent him a freakishly high set of Optilocks free of charge as a remedy. It looks completely silly but it worked. It also had magazine feeding issues that took some work to sort out. A bit disappointing with their reputation as a fine rifle. It is very accurate.

I have a Sako 85 in .270 with a Zeiss Conquest 3-9 mounted on it. Had it for 5 years or so, never an ejection issue. Another member of my hunt club also has a Sako 85 .270 Gray Wolf with a Conquest also. Both of us are using Leupold dovetail mounts. Sounds like you need a gunsmith to take a peak at it.

BTW, also have a stainless Tikka in .270 with a Trijicon Huron 3-9. Never an issue with that rifle either.

It’s a know issue with certain scopes, certain forward/back mounting location, and certain chamberings.

You can fab up a deflector plate for under the windage turret so you don’t have to move your scope to an awkward position.

I had an 85 in 30-06, the case would hit the low profile windage turret on a Weaver K4. Higher rings might have fixed it. I just flipped the scope on it's side. I have heard messing wit the extractor claw can change the ejection angle, but I never messed with it.
