My son drew a youth deer tag for the " Bootheel" area in New Mexico. We're planning on going DIY and making this a family vacation with the wife coming along to help spot and drive. From the limited info online, it makes it seem as if this area is extremely bad for illegal immigration and safety could be a big concern. Does anyone have any recent experience in this area? Is it as bad as the info online makes it out to be? I'm especially worried about camping out of a tent. His tag is good for either species, but being from an area polluted with whitetail, we'll probably focus on mule deer.

It’s definitely a way better coues unit. Access is extremely limited. You will be within earshot of smuggling and human trafficking especially the closer to hwy 2 you get. Generally they just want to do whatever it is they are doing and don’t mess with hunters. Just be extremely aware of your surroundings and lock your stuff up.
