My five year old wants to join me this year on a deer hunt, so I put up a new two man ladder stand earlier this fall. It’s about 20’ to rail and he needs to be strapped in whole time obviously.

Most of the harnesses I’m coming across all look a bit big for him. Anybody have any experience with a harness that would fit a 48 inch kid at just under 50 pounds?

There are rock climbing harnesses made for kids that’s size. I know nothing about tree stand hunting so I don’t know if that is helpful at all.
Yeah. I looked at some of those. They all tether into the mid section and front of torso. Makes sense if facing a rock and line has constant tension. In event of a fall from a sitting / standing position on platform, seems like that set up would whip lash torso (and head) downward. Would rather have tether higher up and fixed to back somewhere about between shoulders.

I’m not a climber but I have used it as an activity for my kids since they were little and I just belay them. The rope doesn’t have constant tension when climbing. The belay line should have the slack out of it but the climbers weight isn’t on the rope unless they fall or decide to take a break and sit into their harness. The front attachment point works because when they fall it swings their head away from the rock (I think?) where as if it was in the back the head would swing down forward into the rock. Use dynamic climbing rope so it has some stretch if he falls.

Sorry if this isn’t helpful. Like I said I don’t know anything about tree stand hunting and barely know anything about climbing lol.

Does look like there are some full body RC harnesses with designed anchor points on back of harness and higher up. Just need to find a small one. The RC harnesses that b attach to front and closer to body CG just doesn’t seem like a good idea for sitting in a tree stand. I want tether in back for convenience while hunting, and want it attached up high (as opposed to closer to CG) to ensure head stays up in event of fall.

Going to keep looking for small full body RC harness.

He’s pretty excited. So is daddy… just a little. ;-)

We checked crab traps last night barefoot. He’s tough. Was dying for him to say “cold” and he finally did. Presented him with “ camouflage” and he was prettttt happy!

I have a small harness from my rappelling/Boy Scout days.

Anyone wants it for their kid, pay shipping and I will send it. PM me for info.

OP, not sure if you can return what you got, but you have first dibs.

The harness you ordered will work great, but for anyone else that finds this thread, I'll throw another option out there.. Muddy makes their Safeguard harness in a youth size. My son started using one at age 4 when he'd tag along with me.

I looked at that one in a couple others. I was worried about it being too big and was running out of time to get something on order.

Good to know it worked at age 4

Thanks man. I’ve already paid for this one that I’ve got. Maybe you can find a home for it with somebody else.!!
