S2H winter class 2026 observations and lessons learned

Looking for a bit more feedback on the Atlantic Rancher sweater. I’m a bit torn, looking for a piece to layer over a woolnet base.. just concerned about breatheability of the piece, especially during any exertion and comparative to a standard/modern active insulation piece? Thanks in advance!
Is there a specific modern active insulation piece you're wanting a comparison to?

"Active insulation" is a pretty broad spectrum nowadays.

Yea I generally think of it as basically a grid flece with a little bit of targeted insulation. Pretty different than this sweater. Its more of a get there and put in on kind of deal for me for anything short of full on winter and minimal exertion.

Tikka(left) has a flat breech face.
Rem and clones use a recessed breech face with minimal clearance, usually .010" or less between bolt face/breech and bolt diameter/recess diameter.

Last year my 6.5 PRC had carbon from the suppressor come down the barrel. part of it got packed in the chamber, part between the bolt face and breech which wouldn't allow the bolt to close.

We didnt go down this rabbit trail, but I'd bet money snow failure is the same. The snow gets compressed to ice in the breech recess and that's it, now it has to melt or you mess around scraping out what you can reach with whatever you can find.

Flat breeches like Tikka let debris get squished out the sides and don't have nearly the blockage issues.
Would a conical breech like on the ARC CDG be likely to behave better like the Tikka breech face? I'm wondering if a design like the CDG could approach Tikka reliability in adverse conditions, particularly with pivoting bolt handle to aid in extraction and with the addition of a Geissele super 700 trigger for increased trigger reliability. In some ways, this might be the best of both worlds in that you could have 700 ecosystem with integral pic rail and recoil lug. I know someone smarter than me has probably already explored this and I'm just wondering if anyone has tested the theory or has commentary on real world experience with the CDG in adverse conditions. Thanks

In short no. Multiple ARC's have done very poorly in the classes including mine
