Ruger No. 1?

It’s not going anywhere. I know the owner very well and he’s committed to hold it for 2 weeks for me while I do my homework. I didn’t even look at the serial number when I first saw it, but called him back after I got home and asked him to send me the serial number (1003). I was shocked when he told me that. This guy’s dad bought it in 1967 and babied it until he died about 10 years ago. The current owner is liquidating most of his guns. Also, iced learned that from 1967-1969 that Ruger supplied rings with their rifles that were split vertically rather than horizontally and the original rings are on it. It has a rail for scope mounting, but not front or rear sights at all. It is a thing of beauty. I had the owner send me a photo of the butt stock.
Very nice

The factory sights stink. The light sporter (model 1a) come with a rudimentary dovetail sight and a gold bead on a post for a front sight. I install a Skinner sight rear aperture sight and a blade front from New England Custom Guns.

Here's those sights. This is a 450 Marlin. The front is their old style patridge sight that has a brass insert on the face. The new one has a thin white line down the middle and black on both sides.

It's easier to make groups with the new sight but it's easy to make "hits" with this one in the photo.

I love my #1 in .243. It’s heavy, it doesn’t shoot great, but it’s got a soul. I love carrying it and shooting it. I have never regretted buying it.
For those who complain of Accuracy have you tried the standard stuff? Trigger, bedding etc?

I have seen talk of the Hicks Accurizer - Has any tried that?

If you’re in love… buy it. You’ll regret it if you don’t. In fact why are you still here and not down at the gun store?

I have not. I use it for whitetails in the timber so it’s fine for that. I would like to try the Hicks Accurizer on it at some point.

Others can verify, I believe early Number Ones had Douglas barrels. I would expect to see a price of $1800- $2000. The vertical factory split rings would add $200, if offered separately. Good luck with your decision- I know it would have a home in my safe!

If I owned a No 1, I would want it in a caliber (308 is perfect) with lots of inexpensive ammo. That would allow me to shoot it a lot.

If it is a good deal, buy it.

Here's another one we have.

280 remington.

I got some brass and dies with it. Waiting on a bartlein barrel to change calibers.

Ruger no 1 serial number 1003 in 308 win is in the safe. I picked it up on Sunday. This is the sweetest feeling rifle I’ve owned. I’m not going to leave this scope on it (4.5-14x42 Burris), but it came on it so I’m not complaining. Thanks to everyone who shared their input and advice. I think this one has found its “forever home”.

Picked up mine today after 35 years of wanting one. Rechambered in a modern cartridge with an old soul.

Nice.

I'm thinking the OG is narrow enough to work with factory irons resoldered farther back on the barrel but I have enough stuff to mess with right now.

I have two No.1’s. A 243WIN and a 375 Ruger.

I just installed a Hicks Accurizer in the 243 WIN and still need to inlet the 375 Ruger for a Hicks as well the stock for a hydraulic recoil damper.

I’m amazed at the punch of the 243 WIN, for a 6mm it’s had more to the shoulder than one would expect. And I’m not recoil sensitive, it’s just a different feel maybe due to it being snappy rather than a push of a larger bore on such a light and diminutive rifle.
