Hello Rokslide,
I just acquired a new to me #1 “B” in .270 26” barrel. I have it all cleaned up, scope mounted, and ready for some load development. I am an experienced reloader, but have very limited time with these rifles. For anyone with first hand knowledge, what type of accuracy can I expect? Any “go to” powder/bullet/bullet weights?

Thanks In advance.

I’d start with what bullet you want to shoot. If it’s 130gr or less I’d try H4350 first. For 140-150gr I’d go 4831sc. Pretty easy cartridge to load for.

I have a ruger m77 mkii .270 win with a 22” barrel. That rifle seemed to shoot the 130 sierra gameking BTSP the best with imr 4831 over any other combo I tried in it. That combo yields a muzzle velocity of 3050 fps. Hornady interlocks shot decent as well. It did not like any combo I threw at it with the 130 sst and imr 4831 or H4831sc

I load my Ruger 77 with 56.5 grains of R-19, and 130 grain Barnes TTSX. Chrono shows 2850 fps. It's not a screamer, but very accurate sub MOA load.

59 grains RL-22 with a 130 Ballistic tip. I'm now using the same powder and charge weight with 140 Sierra Gamechanger.

54.5 gr. of RL-16 with a 130 gr Berger Classic has been great for me. Chrono of just over 3,000 if I remember right.

Ruger hasn’t always made their own barrels - early rifles were more hit or miss, while newer produced rifles are more consistently accurate.

I had a couple of #1 rifles made late 70s early 80s and neither of them would keep groups under 1-1/2 moa. Others have had sub moa rifles.

One of my favorite rifles of all time - I should have kept them both and simply replaced the barrels.

My go too load was IMR 7977 with the 150 gr Ballistic Tip or 160 gr Partition, same charge. Too bad they discontinued that powder it worked well and you would get some excellent speed from that 26" barrel. Magpro might be a good replacement. IMR 7828 SSC and H 4831 sc worked well too with the 150's.

For a change of pace, the 110 TTSX from a 26" bbl will be screaming fast.

I run it at 3350 fps from my 22" M70. 26" bbl and .377 BC at 3450 fps (being conservative, as I think you may get a bit more with newer powders) ) and 8000' elevation (where I hunt in Co) you will carry 2200 fps to the 700 yard line. At 2000' elevation you would carry 2200 fps to 550 yds.

2000-2100 fps is where I would be comfortable, but that gives you a bit to work with at 2200 fps.

Thanks for all the replies. I shimmed the front stock a bit and am getting sub MOA groups with:
58 grains 4831sc
140 Berger
Match Primer

a lot of fun to shoot
