Is it necessary to break in rubber boots for a Newfoundland moose hunt. Well aware of breaking in leather boots but not sure about rubber boots. Thinking about Lacrosse boots and a few others. Want to get something soon to check fit and weight. Thoughts from the moose experts. Thanks

Bump for your thoughts.

I have never been on a moose hunt, but I have used rubber boots a lot. I have used both Lacrosse and Muck boots, and in my experience, breaking them in does help with the comfort and flexibility of them, though not to the extent of leather boots. So far, the Mucks with the neoprene upper seem to take less to break in.

I use rubber boots a lot, and to be honest, I’ve never thought about breaking them in.
My response would be no to your question.

I don't think you will break the boots themselves much, but I find that sometimes with new boots my feet need to get used to them (maybe develop some strength to accommodate the fit). I definitely feel my worst in new boots and get used to them after a few wearings. I'd wear them around the house and yard as much as you can before the hunt if you will be living in them.

I don’t think it can hurt to get some walking time in them before the hunt. You might learn about the best thickness of socks to wear, whether to try a different insole, etc. I definitely preferred my Lacrosse Aerohead Sports over my leather boots for my Newfoundland moose hunt. They are really comfortable for me and you don’t have to worry about the waterproofing of your leather boots.

What Tod and Barrister said above. I’ve worn LaCrosse rubber boots for northern whitetail hunting and also NB bear and Quebec caribou. I don’t believe the boots will “break in” to fit your feet but your feet sure better be broken in to the boot! Don’t set off on a hunt without first spending some real time in your new rubber boots.

A rubber boot story: on our caribou hunt the outfitter provided clear and detailed instructions on what to bring and what to expect. One hunter in my bunch was very unhappy with the new (Browning?) rubber boots he’d brought because they leaked, but he wasn’t as unhappy as the group of hunters who arrived as we were departing at hunts end. A couple of them either didn’t read or ignored the outfitter’s advice and the first shock was having to wade thru 1 foot of near freezing lake water to reach shore from the bush plane. Their 10” leather deer hunting boots didn’t work very well! They offered us $100 for any old pair of rubber boots we’d part with, but the guy with the leaking new boots needed ‘em to return for a refund, and the rest of us sure weren’t stripping off ours. Must have been a very long week for those dudes.

Thanks for all the input gentlemen. I figured it be more breaking in my feet than the boots. Have an older pair of Cabelas boots but they are pretty heavy. Going to be looking for a little lighter pair.
