RRS Scout

I just cancelled my order for the scout with the arc and ordered with the screw clamp. I realized I don't need the lever lock for glassing and it saves well over 1.5 oz. not using the arc clamp. I'm going to pull the whole head off and use the arc lever on the tripod when I shoot so I'll have the same lever anyway.
I only chose SC-ARC because I prefer levers instead of knobs and because the lever has a lock on itself so it can't come loose by accident. So it was really about preference and failsafe security even though I know a knob wouldn't come loose, the SC-ARC literally can't.

I’ve got a bunch of arc levers on things like the bulletseeker and my bipod for the same reason. That lock keeps you from inadvertently opening it.

I have the panning base, too, and have used it a bit. It’s just something else to remember to take.

I thought it was missing parts when I took it from the box it’s so small and light.

I actually got to help with the testing/prototyping throughout the development of this head. If anyone has any specific questions let me know and I’ll help the best I can.

How durable is the current composite handle ?
I was kinda expecting milled aluminum …

It’s extremely tough in my experience. The original design had a much thinner handle/control arm but we all wanted it to be more substantial while keeping the weight down. I’m pretty sure milled aluminum would have added more to the cost and also would be cold to the touch. The handle material they went with is a great option in my opinion.

How's the feedback now that you've had this for a while? Any comparison to a VA-5 or Wiser head in how smooth it pans or how much weight it will stabilize smoothly?

The head pans as well as tilts. The handle twists to control tilt, and the side knob (not visible in the above photo, it’s on the other side) controls panning. The knob in the above photo is for the Arca clamp.

Got mine a couple weeks ago and direct mounted it to a Leofoto tripod. Very pleased with it. Smooth operation, high quality construction.

Mine had been on backorder about a month and is now shipping. To give people an idea of timeframe for current wait times. I got it in the SC-ARC configuration.

ahh gotcha i see it now. Looks like a nice setup, i tried a friends tricer lp but i found it to be to on/off feeling. Either too tight or too loose. Can this one be adjusted to be able to hold optics put while still beng able to pan or tilt?

Need a little more use to give you a good answer on that. I have only had it out once with my 9x45 Mavens on top, and it did great. I’ll test it out with 15s soon. Don’t have a spotter so can’t speak to that.

Yes. I tested with an 883.

Mine finally arrived today (with the SC-ARC attachment style). It's everything I wanted it to be. The tilt being controlled by twisting the arm is awesome and I prefer that style of control compared to my Outdoorsman pan head where both pan and tilt are controlled by knobs. As always, blindly trusting RRS paid off for me.

My only comment is I'm a bit confused why they don't seem to be advertising it much at all. Given how huge of a deal it is for hunters using Anvil heads, I figured they'd be shouting about it from the mountaintops.

They are still relatively new to shooting sports and their foray to hunting is in it’s infancy. Their stuff is so popular they can’t keep up with demand anyway. I remember it took me almost 6-months to get my anvil, they would advertise they had a bunch made up and they’d sell out in a couple days.

My PT Scout took a about 3-4 weeks of backorder and they haven't even advertised it. I suspect the limiting factor for the configuration I ordered is the SC-ARC part. Anything with that clamp seems to always be backordered. It was the same when I bought one for my Atlas CAL.

Another simple "mod" to the Scout is that you add an M4-0.5 set screw on the opposite side of the pan tension knob. This will give you the ability to set minimum pan tension just like the set screw for tilt tension.

This means, if you run a single optic on the Scout you can set both pan and tilt tension and never have to touch a knob or handle. I plan to use this in NRL Hunter on top of my Anvil so I don't have to monkey with the Anvil lever for just the right tension.
