Rope or straps. Recently stocked my truck and 4r with soft shakle also.

but I pulled a drunk guy out of a ditch one night with a doubled up garden hose worked like a champ
used chain for years on emergency purposes because we had nothing else back in the day, chain is a very good medium when using horses, mules, oxen though

All this, chain, rope, strap, stuff is silly. I had to use a backhoe to get my vehicle out. well, first we had to get it back on all fours. Those old Toyota Landcruisers ( Imperial Junk) were beast. That was the only time I ever got it stuck, so to speak.

I’m a logger by trade, and for my opinion, whether it be over my head suspended supporting and hauling logs that weigh tons up or downhill up to distances of 3000’ ft, withstanding tremendous amounts of shock all day long or pulling my Jeep or a moose, cable every day. I’ve also used synthetic tail hold straps with good results, but they are more expensive, wear faster and are more prone to failure.
Good seven strand cable of appropriate diameter, maintained is best for damn near anything you need to do.

Get your lead right. Don’t sidewash your line. Don’t burn your cable. Keep it oiled. Get real shackles if you insist on metal shackles. I’ve never used soft shackles but I can’t see no good reason not too. Get a real block. A small logging type haywire block is perfect. It will handle the weight of three or four rigs, but still be small. Cable is able! Cable works when cold.

For work we pull some big drill rigs up some very steep hills by bulldozer. We use Am-Steel Ropes they are incredible. Much prefer from both a performance and safety standpoint.

Always used a big strap and when I mean big, I mean very big. lol

Back in the '80's had a chain break when I was pulling an old trailer house down. The hook skipped 3 times across my hood, thru the windshield and out the drivers side window. Happened so fast we didn't know what happened, scared the s**t out of us...

using a chain is downright insane. You want something with alot of stretch, the more the better. Have a local place that makes good recovery straps with alot of stretch. Also bought some of the rope type to try. Alot of the strap type recovery straps like erikisons have next to no stretch.

multiple times pulling out strangers ice fishing ive given 2 tugs on there strap only to stop and hook up mine. when you hit the end on slower jerk there should be a spongy feeling not a sharp stop that gives you whiplash. A chain would be far worse. the more stretch the easier you will pull something, and the easier it is on both trucks.
