Thanks for the photos but aren’t you just squishing the bag to hold the rifle? I guess I did use my hand between my rifle and my “bag” (actually my brother’s thigh) on a mule deer, but I am not seeing that you would need your hand between the bag and the rifle if the bag were high enough.

The idea is to control the rifle not just let it rest/ride on the bag.

These aren’t the best, and I normally wouldn’t demo with an AR, but works. You’ll get the idea. My stock isn’t being supported by the bag. It’s being controlled by my hand, which is supported by the bag.

I apologize for the poor illustration. I’m not at my house, so I don’t have a regular rifle or rear bag for a better demo. An AR and a bag of coffee work tho.

*I haven’t gone through S2H, so maybe the technique shown isn’t exactly as they teach it. If not, it’s still a very similar technique, and I was say, the same end result. An attendee can correct me if I’m wrong.

No, not always or even usually- at least not the way S2H teaches it.

If using a rear bag and it’s properly low filled enough, it can be used flat, on its side, standing up tall, etc. It’s just there to fill the void between your off hand controlling the gun and the ground.

Butt of the rifle is still in contact with the bag and toe line of the stock is cradled between thumb and first? I’m following you on this.

Sliding a sloped rifle stock toe up and down along a stiff rear bag for elevation change is what is most commonly taught; and is why folks get a bit hung up on this until they are shown how much better the way we are mentioning here is, in person.

I think @Formidilosus made a video on this very topic here because so many folks were freaking out about it sometime last year or longer ago. Guys thinking they need a sloped toe for elevation change.

Once Form explained in another thread something along the lines that you should grip the "bag" with your pinky and ring finger, and pinch the stock with your middle, index, and thumb, with the stock in the web of your support hand, it clicked. You adjust elevation by grabbing more "bag" material and fine tune with the pinch.

I put that in quotes because I don't take a bag hunting and prefer to improvise with something I'm already going to have. This year I shot the CBC using my game bag kit and after practicing this technique it now seems normal. A balled up puffy jacket works well too.

For sure. Form did post a video on it here but it’s easy for stuff to get buried in this thread.

I could easily do a video shooting in the mountains and showing how I do it when I’m back from Hawaii.

For me it’s the same hand position for seated off pack with tall front rest, kneeling off pack with front rest, seated with no front or rear rest, prone with bino harness on chest as rear rest (once I learned this from Form it’s my go to when prone is an option).

There are other shooting positions where the off hand moves up somewhere to the foreend but in general, as often as possible, controlling the rear of the gun via the toe with off hand is ideal.

I’ll make a video in a couple weeks and make a new thread when I’m back. Or if @Formidilosus can make a thread while I’m gone that would work.

@PNWGATOR would be another who could show his off hand work for various shooting positions using the rokstok.
