As for having had this thread before , if PhillyB wants to have another conversation then lets have it. There is no reason to step all over PhillyB's thread because you have seen or participated in a similar thread previously. If it bores you then don't participate. Forums are continual conversations no static reference materials. How many times have you sat around the campfire and talked about the same chit over and over ? When your buddy brings up a well worn topic do you annouce that we have dicussed this before and you need to remember back and drop it ?

Doesn't matter how you define it, who cares. Get out and enjoy it no matter how you do it or what you think.

And the Million Dollar Question!!

What does it matter?

Hunt Hard and don't worry about the rest!

+1
Regardless of how you hunt, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder right? "DIY" gets tossed around so much nowadays, it has many interpretations. Some great points though ie. packers, use of livestock and airplanes.....

Horseback hunt is DIY.

I didn't see that part about horses when I responded earlier. Did a horseback hunt with my uncle several years ago and would be upset if someone suggested it wasn't "do it yourself" considering all the work required by horses. Only problem with that horseback hunt was the fact our horses couldn't get to all the places I had scouted on foot. :(

If you parachute in but walk out, but you packed your own chute, is that DIY?

Only if you stick the landing.

To me DIY means unguided. At the end of the day, it can mean whatever you want it to mean. The point is to get out there and have fun.

Some pretty crazy ideals out there from what I can tell... Why make it complicated? If you didn't hire a guide and instead "Did it Yourself", why wouldn't it be DIY?

In regards to horses... You raised them, fed them, paid for vet bills, etc... Why wouldn't that be DIY?

Drop camps? Why wouldn't that be DIY? Not everyone has access to a personal plane... Once that plane leaves or pack string of mules leave I am pretty sure you are "Doing it Yourself"...

Public vs Private land? Why does that matter as long as you are "Doing it Yourself"?

I guess I won't waste to much more energy on this response, because it doesn't matter one bit to me. Get out there, hunt your tail off whether that is guided or DIY or what I have been doing the most of lately and that is "DIWF"... Do it With Friends...

Spend less time worrying about what others think and more time preparing to make the most out of every chance you get to hunt...

Your absolutely spot on Nick.

I feel, and have always felt that when no guides are involved, and you're out in the back country, it's DIY. Regardless of if you even have a packer come help you get the meat out, that could be a friend who owns a horse or whatever, people go on DIY moose hunts, but I doubt many people pack out a whole moose solo. There's times when help is a necessity and we're all in this for the love of the hunt, and the outdoors. No high fence or anything like that has been brought up, and none of us are asking to be shown exactly where p&y animals live and still call it do it yourself. We work for our game, and that's how it should be.

The DIY term is thrown around way too much, look on the cover of every hunting mag. To me its no guide, public land,. Doesn't matter how you get there or get out.

Whats your take on AK or Canada? Getting flown in somewhere hunting your butt off then flying the meat out using a taxi. Or how about a boat to an island? Many areas, that's the only option. Is that still DIY to you?
I agree that backpack hunting is the hardest aspect of DIY hunting but there are a lot of other ways that's still DIY.

I think a lot of people just look at the type of hunting they do in the areas they hunt where there are hundreds of different scenarios around the country.

I feel the need to clarify my previous posts. What I meant was that I think each person had their own definition, and I am ok with that, because I know mine and am comfortable with it. I think regardless of each individuals definitions we are all out there doing our best to get it done the best way we know how, so one persons version of "DIY" is no better than anothers, just different. Sorry if I came off as short or condescending Philly. Hunt on gents!

Of course that's still DIY, but I can't write a book on all potential options.

You taking the plain ride is the same as me driving to the trailhead! That's the way I see it anyway....

Just got back from a sucessful grizz hunt. However my dad dropped me and Becca off and picked us up two days later AND Becca wanted to learn to skin a bear so she skinned it under my direction is this still DIY? Seriously guys who cares if its guided or not its all hunting lets get out there and get after it rather quibble about something as trivial as this.
