I’m still trying to wrap my head around this, as well as to finish it. It’s pretty heavy - and the holidays, college football and meming have gotten in the way.

Anyway, I have not yet seen any reason to doubt the guest, but I’m now so skeptical about everything that I don’t completely trust myself, at least with respect to my initial views. Is there nuance here, or more to the story? (Noting as I type this on a device, watching NFL on another…)

I haven't listened to is but saw a quick YouTube video.
All I can say is the flip side is all those people would most likely be jobless if they clean it up.
So as long as its not actually slave labor. I bet if you poled them they would say stfu this is my income.
But yeah the big wide world puts a little perspective into how good we have it in America and the nonsense we chose to scream about here.

This kind of stuff happens 24/7 all around the world my man. You'll stay depressed if you think about it. No one wants to admit to being part of the chain that brings technology and creature comforts to the world.

I'm hoping to getting around to listening to it the next couple nights at work. Trying to finish the jon bernthal that I skipped ahead to.
That one seems pretty deep and dark.
I've been saying for a while now that their will be a documentary in a few years called Blood Batteries.

There also needs to be one on chocolate. Yes, there is an anti-slavery movement in the production of chocolate. I doubt 1:100 have even heard of it. Check out Tony’s Chocolate, they are big in it.

My prediction is that the race to electrify (via batteries) practically everything on earth is going to be our next big environmental "disaster" that will have the same eco-nuts that are now calling for the elimination of fossil fuels to be wringing their hands and decrying all the environmental damage being done to extract cobalt and lithium for battery production. And then the issues resulting from disposing of batteries once they are spent.
Not to mention all the human rights violations that take place.

The people at the top of every industry know the hardship of those at the bottom of every industry. They hide the unsavory bits from the public eye for as long as they can and when it comes out they redirect.
This is not new and it is not going away.

The best you can do is spot hypocrisy and use the new information to lessen the suffering in the world one way or another.

There is always a trade off and it's often very ugly.

Whats suprising to me is that there are people in wealthy countries who dont know or understand there are people with lower standards of living in poor countries.

Just because they have a low standard of living compared to the way you live does NOT mean they are slaves, suffering, etc. Stop feeling bad for people earning a living mining things YOU use for wages in line with the going rate where they live. So they dig by hand, work in dirty conditions, dont make "livable wages" as determined by you, etc big deal. A dollar a day goes a LONG ways in some areas of the planet.

Hmmm
Wonder if we'll ever go back? Any bets?
Afghanistan is incredibly mineral rich. However, there is no infrastructure (roads, electricity, etc...) to efficiently mine it and obvious territorial tribe squabbles that have existed for centuries complicate things. The last I read the Chinese and others are trying to get a foothold, but its gonna be tough for anybody to go in there and successfully negotiate the culture, traditions, etc...

Cobalt, Lithium, etc, the mining of all of these minerals currently involve corruption, slavery, communism, etc to support the market, how is it supposed to be sustainable when everyone drives an EV, and how do you dispose of em?

Just another gaslighting by the global main stream media

My problem in this whole debate is the US and other Western countries attitude and hypocrisy. We won't mine it here, because of the bad optics and contradictions with our environmental policies. However, we're happy to have it mined elsewhere in terrible conditions and let those countries destroy the environment in their backyard. Ridiculous...

There is a very large mine in NE MN that has been waiting for permitting for years to extract rare earth minerals.

"...Minnesota, which is home to 95% of the nation’s known nickel reserves, 88% of the cobalt, 75% of the platinum group metals and 34% of the copper, according to Twin Metals Minnesota..."

I was a Supply Chain Management major in college. China was the main focus when we would discuss the craziness "workers" endure, but it happens all over. Most people don't want to know what it actually takes for us to have a cell phone in our pocket.

Yes, it's ugly and hypocritical. It's also pretty basic human nature to not want to destroy the natural places in your home country and pay more for something if someone else is willing to destroy their spot and sell it to you for cheaper.
