Not sure if this is the best place for this post but here goes. I'm a newb to rifle hunting. I've only bow hunted so far. I have hunted for 7 years and have been successful all but one so I'm not a newb to hunting.

I'm wanting some input on a scope for a tikka t3x in a 30-06. I'm looking at the Vortex Viper HS 30mm. There's a few options for power ranges. I'm debating on the 2.5-10x44 and the 4-16x44. I'll be using it for Kansas Whitetails mostly in rolling hills and open plains and perhaps a Utah elk or deer hunt in the future. Not looking for a long range gun. Just a solid practical hunting rifle.

Personally I have always used anything in the 3-9X40 range. They have always worked for me and my family so I see no need for anything different. I would get the 2.5-10. Wide field of view with plenty of capability to zoom in if you need it.

From my personal point of view I found that Vortex get dark on higher magnification and at dawn. I personally like new leupold vx3i. Ill go with 3.5-10x40 cds if you set with one load, or Sightron S tac 3-16x44 give you more ability with target turrets. Personally I settle with Tikka T3x Super Varmint 6.5x55 top with Sightron S tac 3-16x44. And I will top my elk gun in 338 RCM with VX-3i 2.5-8x36mm CDS.

I've got a Tikka in 300wsm topped with a Vortex 4-16x44, I love the gun but not exactly thrilled with the optic I chose, I'm prob due for an upgrade
dusk and dawn are pretty important to me

I'm not set on one load. Right now I'm thinking I'll use 150 grain on Whitetails and perhaps 180 grain if I end up hunting elk with this gun. So in that case, would you recommend getting a Leupold vx3i without the cds?

Thanks for all the input guys.

There is/was a Leupold 3-9 CDS in the classified. You can easily run 2 differently loads and swap the turrets. I'm running the exact scope on my 30-06 and have no issues however I haven't had a chance to stretch her legs out to 300+ with the new dial that came in last week.

Leupold VX2 2-7x33 with MOA elevation dial on my t3 lite in 30-06. Love love the combo. Lightweight low profile scope that matches the gun nicely. I have only handled the vortex in store and I really wanted to like them but I would never buy one over a Leupold.

Look into the Zeiss Terra line. I put a 3-9x40 RZ6 reticle on my wifes Tikka 270 and its a perfect match for an all around light weight gun. That RZ6 reticle will work great with a 30-06 and no need to mess with turrets if you are shooting under 600 yds

personally, as in I M O, I don't see what the big rage over "dialing" inside of 500 or even 600 yards is all about - first and foremost in my mind is the fact that you're giving up learning what "doping" the wind AND trajectories is all about and nearly as much an issue to me is that you are putting your trust in the shot to potential mechanical failure when inside this range limitation it's just not necessary (unless, of course, you're a SNIPER) learn to shoot "old school" first then mess around with the doo dads that are all the rage - Of course now, this is merely my lowly inexperienced opinion

there is no doubt that German/Austrian glass has always been superior to most American or Asian but after reading a lot of reviews I seriously doubt the Terra line is in that class

you should do yourself a favor and take a good look at the Leupold glass, VX2 is the "bang for your buck" line and the VX3i is that much better - why take a nice new lightweight Tikka a put a heavy, arguably inferior scope on it ?

99% of my shots are less than 150 yds. I want to have my gun sighted in for 100 yds. I hunt thick bush so i am more confident having my gun sighted in closer and knowing exactly were the bullet is traveling on those close shots. This results in a 28" drop at 400 yds. So the extremely rare chance that I have a 400 yd shot I don't want to be messing with an estimated 28" hold over. The small tiny dial on the top of my scope gives me the best of both worlds. I am sighted in close for the majority of my shots but if the need arises i can dial quick and be confident further out.

If most of my shots were between 250 and 350 then ya just sight in so I have minute of deer out to 350 and then a little further requires a bit of hold over. The dial works for me though and I enjoy it at the range as well.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the input. I'm going to get the vx3i based on everyone's recommendations. I looked at the weights and the vx3i weighs 4 ounces less which is pretty significant to me. Looking forward to picking it up tonight after work and eventually putting it to good use.

What scope rings and based would y'all recommend? I've heard good things about talleys. Cabela's didn't have the scope in stock so I had to order it.

You chose a great rifle! I think that most guys that have the tikka run talleys or DNZ's. I actually run stock tikka rings and have had no issues whatsoever. I kinda like them.
