If it helps I leave the sling long enough for my rifle to hang as low as possible without touching my legs as I'm walking, probably have the stock about touching my belt buckle when the rifle is flat across me.
This is the sling I use on everything now. I have used the regular wide one, the contoured one, and the thin one. The thin one is best for me. Especially when wearing a pack.

Second the safari sling, I get no noticable sholder fatigue, it never slides off shoulder, and it is really quick to pull the gun to shoulder.
