I drew a rifle cow moose tag in Colorado this year.

I’ve shot a couple bull moose with a rifle (340 & 375HH) but not a cow.

My top two rifle choices are:

30-06 Winchester M70 - 180gr handloads

340 Weatherby Mark V - 225gr handloads

Asking the Rokslide gang two questions:

What gun should I use? (Proficient with both)

Where would you shoot this cow?

Right behind the shoulder. She will die immediately. Either cartridge will bring her down. I hit mine with a 180 handload, 300 WM and she did not move, fell over dead.

‘06 would be my choice. Stay out of the shoulder for a meat hunt. Probably aim for the lower 1/3rd of my circleIMG_3600.jpeg

Yep, right there. A large cow will yield 60+ lb fronts. Mine were 62. Definitely shoot for minimal meat damage. It is delicious.

My Shiras bull moose was the best wild game meat I’ve ever had.

Definitely going to be a meat hunt

I was on a hunt with my friend for a cow moose last year. 2x shots from his 270 and it was lights out. 220m shot, and the second shot was to make sure she didn’t go anywhere. Either gun will work, 30-06 probably better though

That looks like a young cow to me based on her head face and shoulder definition. I'd wait for a older bigger more mature cow if it was my tag. Might be tender and young but there is significantly less muscle mass on that cow than a more mature cow.

Considering you can typically get about 20 yards away before they spook put it right between the eyes and save the organ meat ;) in all seriousness, boiler room and any of those rifles will work

Congrats! How many points? I would use the gun that recoils the least.

Those neck roasts are going to be delicious. Shoot her in the lungs and save all the meat!

I’d find a nice, fat 1.5 year old. Bigger than any bull elk you’d ever kill and tender as a steer! Let me know if you run out of freezer space. 😜

What are the bullet choices?
