Im really glad this all worked out. Probably too late now but you could have always offered him some moose meat!
I would get him a gift card to Cabelas. He can buy in store or online. Lots of outdoor options for him to choose.
Talked to Kendall at blackorivis, they are adding giftcards to their website this week. Far superior customer care than Cabelas. A giftcard makes a lotta sense.
Well 300lbs of moose meat arrived from Canada after four days of travel with 20lbs of dry ice in each ice chest, the cuts were as hard as diamonds. Quickly switched to Chef Bruce mode and cranked out some cheddar-crested, jalapeno sliders with spicy mayoand some bacon, lettuce and tomato with zesty guacamole moose sliders. Fried the moose burgers in the bacon drippings. Gotta tell ya, the family devoured em faster than I could make em.
Gotta freezer full of free range, organic, grass-fed steak with no additives, preservatives, antibiotics or hormones and feeling very blessed! Thanks guys!
Bruce, after all that frustration would you go back and hunt with this guide and use his butcher again? This was quite the roller coaster of emotions for you and everyone reading this thread and I'm just curious about where you stand with this guy. Was it just a lot of misunderstanding or was it a bunch of tooth pulling that you wouldn't risk putting up with again? Once again, just curious because I know you were really impressed with the guides performance, then you were destroyed at the thought of losing your meat and antlers (as any of us would be) but then it all worked out anyways. Would you hunt with this guy again or did it leave too much of a bad taste? Glad it all worked out for you in the end.
That's an excellent question Frank and I'll be honest...I've been trying to answer it for myself all week with difficulty. The way you phrased the question actually helped me make a determination. The issue of miscommunication and misunderstanding cannot be one-sided, both parties must bear some responsibility when there is an absence of malice. So I must accept that I made an assumption and failed to ask a direct question. In the end, the butcher's work is quality and the guide could not have tried harder. I spent 12 long days with that guy and he continued to inspire and impress me. I tipped him far better than I expected to and learned so much hunting with him I can say with certainty, I will return. I had the time of my life up there in Alberta and got to full draw on game more times in 12 days than I have in the past 10 years hunting elsewhere. Every day was exciting. I never woke up feeling down, like it wasn't gonna happen. Jared, my guide kept me positive even when circumstances were completely devastating to my morale. I have nothing but respect and admiration for this man. Eyes of an eagle, legs of a giraffe.
Next time I take the meat home with me on the plane.
