Indeed a high R-value'd pad greatly helps with temp regulation and keeping you warm.

Sleeping bags only work when the insulation has loft. When your laying in your sleeping bag, your body weight is compressing the insulation underneath you thus that area of insulation is not very efficient or effective. Thus with a quilt you do away with that extra non efficient weight and rely on your pad to insulate you from the cold ground.

Mike

Anyone know what R-value is recommended for a quilt?

I have an original Neo-air and I think they are rated a 2 or 2.5 R. Just wondering if this would work??

Not 100% sure but I want to say I've read that a 2.5-3.5 R-value will get you down to freezing. I would guess your neoair would work fine into the end of September but only you can be the judge of that.

Hopefully someone else with a little more education will chime in here.

Thanks Mike.

I guess I'm a cold sleeper. I've got a bag rated at 20* and there are times I'll freeze my a@@ off at 40*.
Which is why I've been thinking a 0* quilt.

Most of my hunting is going to happen in Septmber but some years you may encounter a variety of weather conditions.

My plan is to use a quilt much like littlebuf's (a zpacks.com 30*) and a Thermarest Xtherm pad. I plan to use this setup to around 20* by utilizing the clothes that I already carry when I'm hunting. I'm still waiting for my quilt to show up though so I don't know if I will get a chance to test the temp rating before fall. It will be cool to compare the features of the two quilts this year on our trips.

IMO the insulation of the pad is very important. The only cold night I've ever had was due to an uninsulated air pad from BA.

I see they make these in synthetic also. The gears are turning but unfortunately I don't need another warm weather bag for a while.

Either way a pad is an important part of almost any bag or quilt. Espcially if its the only thing keeping you off the ground. But the only way to really know what works for you is to try. Sleeping systems can be very subjective.

I was using a zlite for my night out in the yard. 34 degrees and a pretty low r value on that pad. I did not feel any cold or heat loss to the ground through that pad. its the first time ive used this pad and im not fully sold on it. im a side sleeper and it wasn't the most comfortable pad to lay on, not bad but not great. I really want to get the xtherm like your running Justin but ive got some other things to pick up and may not be able to swing it before hunting season. a couple scouting trips with the zlite and ill know if I want to take it up for my long elk trip this fall, if not ill fall back to my pro lite4 its a solid pad just not the lightest. im really looking forward to checking out that zpack quilt too, that thing is crazy lite

My first pad was a Z-lite. Let's just say I really enjoy the Neo-Air. Comfortable!!!

I was looking at Cascade Designs website today and it appears the Z-Lite and the Neo-Air are about the same in R-Value.

About a 2.5 R.

According to what I could find they recomend a R value of 3 minimum for below freezing, and above 3 for four season use.

I am thinking the Neo-Air will probably work for my use. If in doubt I can place my
Sikta 90% jacket under me as an insulating layer. I have been packing a Gossamer Gear thinsulate 1/8" foam pad for extra protection anyhow.

Thanks again for the review littlebuf.

I am getting ready to order one and was wondering about length I am just under 5'7" and was debating either getting the 5'6" or the 6'. Do you think if you were two inches taller you would have enough length?

I asked Tim and he recommended the 5'6" just wanted to see what you thought after trying your bag.

the foot box and snaps are also a really nice design. again giving a lot of flexibility on configurations. when zipped up and all three snaps done up your legs are fully wrapped but theres still plenty of room to move around. I wear a size 13 and have some pretty long legs at 6'5" and I fit in this thing with a ton of room to spare, could easily pull it up over my eyes before I felt any stretch on my feet.
