what resources do you look at when hunting a new state for elk, for the first time? specifically in my case wyoming archery.....any other recommendations other than the wyoming game and fish? i think i know where i want to hunt, just want to see what resources or things most people look at

had always planned on driving there and doing some scouting, but my recent move from utah to wisconsin makes that a bit more difficult

One thing to remember about Wyoming- hunting in designated wilderness requires a guide for non residents.

For Wyoming, your best bet is to dive into the statistics on the fish and game web site. Look at the last three consectutive years for points required for drawing a specific unit. I actually just got done looking over the last three years for the unit I'm looking into. It's interesting and discouraging to see patterns like point creep.

yeah, points shouldnt be an issue, ive been meaning to put in for awhile i just kept putting it off so i have the points....ive spent lots of time on maps and at one point the G&F website, need to get back into it again to make my final decision. i just wasnt sure if there is any additional things to look at. yeah i did know about the wilderness area requirement, but thanks for the reminder

Also, consider the grizzly question. Always the damn bears...

"Check out a website called Hunters Trail Head. They give fairly accurate info on point totals required for every unit and method of take for all of the Western states. It is under their draw odds page. I use it all of the time. Then get a copy of Eastman's magazine with Colorado's MRS section which come out in their March/April magazine. You have to be either a digital or paper subscriber to get the MRS section. It is a great companion for out of state hunters to do research on units in the West."
I just posted this in a Colorado posting but it is relevant here as well. Except the Wyoming MRS for the magazine comes out in Feb/March.

Subscribe to eastmans and you will have access to info about all the top units of all western states for all species. Pretty good resource if you're looking at new states/units. You will be able to look up all past articles as well.
